Checking out the local competition, I see one competitor's webite showing the NICEIC approved contractor logo, but as far as I can tell they only do PAT testing. Is it possible to get NICEIC approval just for PAT testing? Will give them (NIC) a call later to check, but in the meantime wondered if anyone here could give some insight.

I think all these approval bodies will approve anything that brings money in these days so it wouldn't surprise me if they do

No,approved contractor status is only reached through 2 years of work on all manor of installation and testing work, check on nic website, must include domestic, commercial, all wiring methods.flat pvc/pvc,pvc trunking and conduit, trunking, cable tray, every type to show a contractor deserves the right,if you are approved contractor you are proven to know your job and all the methods and testing involved,i dont see where pat testing would come into it as it is not on the scope of approved contractor status,an approved contractor deserves much respect

Hi

Not sure about NIC as we are members of Select here in Scotland, as part of our membership with them they will add Pat testing to your company profile on there website if you have done their Pat testing course ( one day course costs ApproxÂŁ100) if you are not a member you can still do the course but costs a little more and The SJIB and JIB will accept the certificate and add it to your grading card if you have one, this may be an option if you dont want to join NIC.
On another note a customer of ours was told by local council during there inspection(they had noted the pat testing labels had expired) that he could do it himself and just do visual, also a company has been going round selling ÂŁ100 pound pat testers to companies and there selling line is you dont need to be an electrician. So it is still a grey area need NIC and the others bodies to decide once and for all, or maybe H and S and EWR need to be reworded.

Danny

PS we have lost 4 contracts to self testing using these cheap pass fail meters being sold.

Here is part of an email reply I got from the NIC :

Qualifications
The Qualification required to become a Portable Appliance Tester would be the City & Guilds 2377 (Code of practice for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment) prior to assessment.

Assessment
You will need a selection of work for assessment. Normally a minimum of three samples of work are to be selected for a half day assessment. Work in progress can be selected where the operative concerned should be observed. Varying types and classes of electrical equipment shall be selected for assessment wherever possible.

Fees
The current application fee for the Portable Appliance Scheme is ÂŁ370+vat (direct debit), ÂŁ390+vat (cheque). If there is a need to re-assess your work, there will be an additional cost associated. An annual renewal fee will be payable in 12 months time (from the date of application), this figure may vary in the future, however, thirty days notice will be supplied to all registered members prior to payment.

Time Scales
On receipt of your application your details will be given to your assessor, the appointment will be in about 6-8 weeks, after the assessment the report will be sent back to head office and a certificate will be issued. The whole process will take approximately 8-10 weeks.

kinell - ÂŁ400 to get approved status just for PAT testing. And it takes 10 weeks. Totally not worth it.
And the logo I saw on this guys site was the NIC Approved Contractor logo, not the NIC PAT tester logo. May just dig a bit more, if only to put the cat among the pidgeons :)

Like being back at school and the class snitch!!

No - like someone trying to offer a decent service at a realistic price (that's me) trying to compete against someone claiming they are NICEIC approved and Trustmark approved and offering PAT at 70p per item (that's him). Maybe they are approved, and are just doing PAT under a different trading name, but it doesn't smell right to me. We'll see if the NIC have any teeth. If I'm wrong, I'll hold my hands up and say so.

email from NIC....

"Thank you for contacting the NICEIC. After checking from the details on the website I can confirm that the contractor is not registered with us. I have now forwarded the link for their website to our misuse of logo department for them to do further investigations."

so I'm not being called a snitch now then :)
have also contacted Trustmark but they haven't got back to me yet.
They are also using C&G logo, but I guess that can't be checked so easily.

Send the guy an email, say you are a solicitor acting on behalf of a company he recently tested, say you require his C&G pat certificate number as somebody was recently shocked at the work place, ask for his insurance policy details and mention that the niceic have already denied his membership.

Make the letter/email look good with some fake logo and fake address.

ThAt should make him run and hide under a rock somewhere for a few years :D :D
