I’d appreciate your professional views on this question, as I’ve had 2 of the associated electrical bodies quizzed on this.!!!!

ON changing/up grading a DB/Fuse Board/ Consumer Unit..!!!!!!

There are both Blue/Brown & Black/Red.

ALL ‘pre insulation’ and ‘r results’ are good and within required tolerances.!

WHY WHY WHY should the older Black/Red cables within the DB, be SLEEVED with Brown and Blue..????????

If an individual shows only ‘Competency’, they should in NO way be removing the lid of the DB…!!!!

The ONLY ONLY person doing this should have qualification and should therefore KNOW the difference in the colour change etc.

IF you start sleeving the old cables.!!! Isn’t this ADDING possible flammable items within the DB, or adding to the thermal effect of that individual single as you’ve now introduced and added thermal sleeve.

IF a qualified Sparkie doesn’t know the difference between Brown/Blue and Black/Red then should he/she be working.???🤔

If, as I’ve been told, by one of the Electrical Bodies, that sleeving the OLD colours within the DB, should be performed.!!!!

WHY WHY do we have those stickers available to use on the outside of the DB informing that there are different colours within.???????

Am I going mad.????🙀🙀🙀

They do not require sleeving providing they are correctly identified as to their purpose. The two coloured notice is no longer required.
If they are saying to do this within the DB do they advise the same at every accessory.
Are you not some sort of assessor you should be well aware of this.

And also, sleeving is perfectly safe to use inside consumer units. It is not flammable so don't worry about that.

As above, the two colour notice is no longer required either.

Many thanks for your response….

I’m aware of the new regs regarding the issues of stickers/ notices.!!! Etc

MY POINT, ( and apologies if this didn’t come across ). Is WHO should be removing the DB cover.?????

If your qualified, you should know the colours and colour change.!!!!!!!!

So WHY should there be the need for sleeving.???

( I know I’m being a bit pedantic…. BUT where is the line drawn between qualified and Competence).

What you regard within, or outside of the refs, as COMPETENCEs.???

If the insulation of the conductor represents it's function it does not require sleeving.
You ask where is the line drawn between qualified and competence, are you not some kind of assessor who should be able to define the levels of ability.

I’m having a ‘Blow off Steam’..!!! Session and THANKYOU for appeasing me.!!!

You’ll love this one.!!!!!

We know the difference between making ‘Additions or Alterations’ to an installation BS7671.

BUT changing ‘Like for Like’ is something that a person with Competence can do….
AGREED.

Change a lamp (bulb).

Change a double gang sw plastic socket with similar (not metal).

Change a plastic sw plate for similar.

So if you can change LIKE for LIKE,..!

What stops you, with Competence, from changing a Fuse Box, with DP ISO, with DP RCD protecting 6x MCBs????

With a DB with DP ISO and 6 RCBOs.

Prior to the change, you had 6x MCBs with RCD controller.????

Post the Change you end up with 6x circuits with MCB and RCD….!!!!!
[RCBO]…!!!!!

The works carried out are on the clients side of an Isolater from the DNO…!!!!

Is this LEGAL…???? (forget the paperwork side).!!!!

What are your thoughts.?????

Hi Westward10,
I’ve posted you the info/response I recieved for the ‘Like for Like’ and the ‘Sleeving’ questions….!

I gave it to YOU, as it was given to me.!

BUT just wanted a third party’s input….

I’ve got another one for you if your willing to put up with it????

You can change a length of damaged/faulty cable like for like.
What if that length was to the CU, would it be considered a new circuit?
IMO? (wait for some opinions) then will reveal

Not a new circuit no. But obviously needs testing.

There, I've said it. Comments welcome :)

Always nice to get a second opinion.
