Do you have to do the AM2 to be qualified?

C

Hi there I've been told by someone who passed his level 3 2330 that you don't need to do an AM2 to be qualified, its not necessary, however I've heard different from other people. Can anyone put me straight?

Cheers:)

A little clarification is needed here. An ECS card is not a certificate as an electrician, it is the electricians equivalent of the CSCS card which is a health and safety certificate, nothing more. JIB will not give you full accreditation without a level 3 certificate (2330/2365/2357) and an NVQ level 3. NICEC will accept anyone with three pieces of paper, 17th edition, either 2391/2394/2395 and a cheque.

Since you already have a 17th certificate, to join NICEIC you just need a level 3 certificate in Inspection and testing Last time I looked it cost £576 for a new start up fee plus £350 for a site assessment You are looking at over £900 and then you have to buy their encyclopaedia on their take on the wiring regs for another £400-£500. It would be cheaper and better to do 2394 and the AM2 which is an industry recognised trade test

Your easiest option would be to do the NVQ3, you should have no problem if you are working on site as a mate. I hope this is helpful

AM2 is a show that you can apply the theory you have learnt into practice and actually do the job.... back when i did the 15th edition you were not classed as fully qualified unless you had completed your AM2...

Some people find theory easy but can't do practical or interpret the theory into bending real conduit etc the test is to ensure if you want to be classed as an Electrician you can undertake an exam to show your practical skills... as above their are costly alternative routes but if someone is deliberately avoiding doing the AM2 then questions should be asked about their abilities to do your job....
