Proud to call myself an electrician, even prouder once I got the 2391 out of the way.

However, when I see old friends driving sports cars from being in sales of banking jobs in the city, I wish I had tried harder at school!

Although, we all know those jobs can all come crashing down..

I enjoy it, I can't think of many other trades where the work you're doing can differ so much from one week to the next, one week might be house bashing week after might be installing cabling and connecting UPS or generator systems.

This is one of the many things I love about our trade. Over the past couple of years I've worked in some strange places. A "knocking shop", a lap dancers rickshaw bike, a fire engine, a motorised shopping mail clock, a few schools, fire alarms in factories and offices and a couple of world known restaurants chains and many of normal hard working people like us fixing their faults or rewiring their homes.

End of the day it's all wire's and boxes, we design, we install, we test and it all works for many of years if done correctly. That's what I take away with me after every job. I'm happy with that.

Customers from every sector only see sockets, lights and switches. Do I love my job? Yes I do. It's just the customers that spoil it in most cases.

I was very lucky my brother was an apprentice industrial electrician. He’s nine years my senior (to the very day). He set up a board in the garage for me to play with. 230V control no RCD if I got a belt off it, it was my fault!

I was hooked!

Over the years there’s been the down side, I never saw my son open his Christmas presents, I was at work.

The up side, there’s too many to list.
An ÂŁ8M protect starting up at the press of a button (did it bollox, a week spent sorting out glitches).
Sat in the office with the senior engineer from a major contracting firm confidently telling me “all the drives will run the correct way.” They didn’t! A hangover from when we had our own power station, the phase sequence was BYR.

The sad fact is now many members of this forum would not know what you mean with BYR instead of RYB.

I like my job its got a lot of variation.

Had a crash course in building scafolding yesterday and today with builder, then insulated loft and probably bms tomorrow (either bms or door access im not sure yet)
