This fuse box is in the garage of my new house, does anybody know anything about it or the age of this item, I'm not sure how safe it is and in what condition the electrics are in there, so I have left it switched off, it comes straight from the electricity meter and goes to a socket, light switch and a fused spur for the outside light.

Thank you
Leo

"Straight from the meter"? Does that mean it has its own supply, or is the house supply split through Henley blocks? Can that fuseboard be isolated if you do go ahead to change it Is that a pair of 16mm tails? Earth wire anywhere?
EICR definitely, nice wee job for someone

Do you intend on replacing you kitchen or bathroom in your new house?

IIRC some Bill Crown splitters do, some don't have asbestos flash pads. Not really a problem either way as it would be enclosed behind the fuse carrier, you can take the cover off without disturbing it. These were pretty solid, not sure I've ever seen one faulty or burnt other than the usual cracked bakelite cover if it gets a heavy clout.

Been on a few asbestos awareness courses through work, one of the questions the guy asked was "what would you do if the asbestos piece fell out of the fuse holder?"
Some replied "leave the area and inform somebody", some said close the building and seal off the room"
The answer was "pick it up and put it back, as long as you don't rumple it up and inhale, it's fine"

Yes put it back!!!!!!!!!
I was at a property last year that had been attacked by the health and safety brigade. The asbestos flash pads had been removed from all the fuse holders. Unfortunately, without the pads to absorb the arc, when one of the fuse wires blew due to a short circuit fault, an arc started between the supply side of the fuse contact and the earthed fuse holder fixing screw. This took out one of the cutout fuses. The flash pads are there for a reason!

Love condemning old switchgear on EICRs, when it's not up to scratch! Got to watch for high pfc at origin, or a BS88 carrier where some numbskulls put in a bit of fuse wire across (or a bit of 2.5mm) wonder what that would do under a short circuit!
