Hi im new to this game as you will probably tell but i am also not one of these fly by night just done a weeks course i can now do everything guy. Basicaly my experiance so far is 100% mains electric supply as i work for a energy supplier installing single phase and 3 phase electric meters. my current knowledge extends to basicly being able to rewire everything from the electric meter to the consumer unit with little knowledge beyond the consumer unit. What i am interested in is up skilling to become able to perform consumer unit upgrades as with my line of work i see 10-15 customers houses everyday and you can gaurentee at least 5 will ask me how much to upgrade this and that so i thought why dont i upskill gain the correct qualifications and create my own company to capitalise on this. Now i could attend one of these week long courses you see advertised on the internet but im a firm believer in if your going to do a job do it right first time round so who better to ask than qualified electricans any help would be appreciated were i start , which course i need ect ect.

im not changing any cu yet!! i'll ask you a question rob2 when you first started out in this game were you competent enough to change a cu? i'll answer it for you no you were not. I asked a question regarding rcds as i am qualified to extract a mains fuse from the dno cutout which allows me to work safely on an internal supply now if i know im not qualified to change a cu what do you think im going to do instead maybe fit a dp isolation switch or rcd? this is why i asked the question to see wether a rcd would be better than a bp isolation switch which i am competent to fit. maybe these so called "electricains" who seem to think having a dig at someone is amusing ought to ask them selves a question are you's competent enough to hold down common sense conversations or just silly remarks?? if it the latter then be gone with you

This post sums up your poor attitude, good luck with getting any answers when you respond like that.

how many blaggers have been on asking about how to gain the correct qualifications and how to go about it? if i as a blagger i wouldnt be on i would have just paid my fee and went on a weeks course bobs your uncle. but im not let me reasure you i advise customers all day long to seek professional advise and not just any old jack from down the road to do there work. i am genuinley interested in becoming up skilled and was only trying to find out if fitting a rcd would be better than a dp isolation switch. like i said before left of the cu unit im all over it from the cutout but beyond the consumer unit though my knowledge is limited thats why i asked the question.

you say poor attitude but all im recieving is negative snarky comments constantly reminding me im not competent to change a cu unit! i know this i was asking how to up skill to aquire this qualification and knowledge but it seems alot of people just come to put others down were do you go from there?

Who's said you're not competent. NOT ME.

edf a large company? no edf are cowboys and subcontract all there work out to g4s utility who are even bigger cowboys if the olympics is anything to go off. On a more serious note i can understand why you would worry about some people working with live electrics as some of the larger companys are training up meter readers to install electric meters and i have witnessed some of there handy work when i have had to attend call outs for cross polaritys and exposed copper and yes i agree the training is diabolical but thankfully i was all ready familiar with electrics as i was a engineers within the lift industry for 10 yrs before i moved to metering so i knew a little already.

to reply to a question put by shocking_eg you are correct we ho change your meters are indeed not qualified electricians and infact i started out with british gas and i as flabagasted at the training they provided to new recruits on how to change electric meters 2 WEEKS TRAINING that is all now as i explained i had prevouis knowledge of electrics little i awknowledge but never the less i shared a room for six months with a guy who was a waiter all of his life and is now a trained 3 phase meter engineer. i have raised concerns about this training method and in my daily job i audit engneers and see just how shocking some are.
