Discuss dol starter motor in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

The OP is an Electrician so we can assume certain common sense practices, it seems that this is out of his field of experience hence he posted for a few hints and until he responds the thread is in stalemate tbh, but in the meantime if you two can stop bouncing off each other with nit picky comments and retorts it will be appreciated as it just pulls the thread down and doesn't help anyone. :) Play nice guys!
I,m out

Try to
1)Check your push button as well
2)Check your contactor's coil, does it open circuit?

Replace a contactor if you need a quick solution for this.

I'm with darkwood on this "The OP is an Electrician so we can assume certain common sense practices". He should be able to fault find this circuit. There is not a lot to a DOL starter.

How does the start Barron operate?
Don't some of them work simply by pushing the black bit on the contactor?
Wondering if the start button has been broken, or been turned around?

Had this recently where the start button wasn't making contact with with black bit on the contactor when pushed in. Turned the button round and job was a goodun.

Theres a bit of plastic that can break off so the green NO button does not get pushed in.

Looking at the photo its time stamped last year 10/11/2015 wonder if thats when the fault occured and they are actually pushing in the contactor to use the machine?

Hi Andy, Welcome to the forum :)

Re' your query, your question is a bit broad, we need to know what if any is on the control circuit, what test results are for the control circuit, I assume you have checked the O/L unit hasn't tripped and needed resetting too.

It should be pretty easy to identify the issue here but other than a faulty start contact block I would edge my bets your stop circuit is open circuit or loss of power to control, if this is due to the O/L been in a tripped status then pushing the main contactor in manually is not a good idea as you could damage the motor.

thanks darkwood. I changed the complete unit and it is still doing the same thing. any suggestions?

What testing have you done here?

If the brand new one does the same then I suspect you haven't identified the problem and just changed the controls on a whim that it might work, not sure how your customer would see all that extra cost if he knew there was nothing wrong with the existing, you need to test the control circuit out and identify the problem, if your not sure how it all works then you shouldn't have got involved with it, I suspect the stop circuit is open circuit somewhere and could be external to the DOL contactor but we lack info to what if any external actuators exist.... falling short of giving you a step by step guide to explain how to resolve this which we don't do I would suggest you check for any remote limit switches, stop buttons, E-stops that haven't been reset or generally loose or broken wires.. I'm not saying its the stop circuit at fault but is high on the probability list here.

PS - checking your pic again you have external controls by the look of it albeit wired in incorrect colour codes for control wiring.

Simon I deleted your post because it wasn't helpful, I know it was meant in jest which is why it will go no further, but as a trainee I would hope you can appreciate that comments like that don't help anyone.
