Afternoon Ladies and Gents (and ladyboys if there are any on here).

I missed out on getting the nod to carry out 30 odd PIR's for some rich fella who's got a load of properties down here in sunny South Wales.

I quoted ÂŁ30 (I normally charge about ÂŁ90) per PIR and said I would carry out a complete inspection of all accessible fixtures and fittings for each property. I lost out to a bloke who will do them for ÂŁ12 each (I don't know how much detail he would go in to).

I tend to find that when I carry out a PIR on a domestic, that I tend to get the improvements work, so I suppose my question(s) is, is it worth carrying out domestic PIR's free of charge? Is there anyone who has tried it and how did it work out for them?

Your thoughts are always appreciated.

I'm not. Of all the services an electrician can offer, I think a PIR is the one you can under sell yourself on. No materials (other than the cert), labour only and the possibility of follow on work especially if you can build a decent rapport with your customer.

I dion't know where you live but I'm in Cardiff and in the next week or so there will be thousands of empty student houses, a great number of which will need PIR's

for a 2 bed house i wud say charge ÂŁ130, u jus cant do these things any cheaper, wots the point & all tests shud be carried out correctly & properly. cheers gents

Whoa there. At no point did I say that the test or inspection should not be carried out to a sub standard level because it's FOC. I'm trying to look at the bigger picture, a bit like the spark who beat me on the quote. He's now got work in 30 something houses. That'll take him through the summer. I took a look around 3 of the houses. All 3 had no RCD protection and the installations were aged. He's quids in or at the very least, his foot is in the door.

Times are hard. Alot of other ppl charge alot more etc and will argue all day long about prices.(que prices arguement)
London ppl will say ÂŁ250 ish and so on.
You cant do them for free mate!
Its like us on here the word spreads fast, Can you imagine all the landlords straight on teh phone saying i found someone to do a PIR for free?
Id say your having you leg pulled good and proper mate!
Iv worked in wales and i know its all alot cheaper there butt!

I'd say your price of ÂŁ90 for a pir is about right for the area, some will be surprised but they dont know the reality of the economics around here
The pir would generally take half a day for the real Mc Coy,so are we talking a Pir or visual thing that he is doing for the ÂŁ12

The problem with your suggestion of a free pir
A free visual maybe,British gas and other cowboy outfits are already on to that

Who is to say that you wont find yourself used,in that, they get the freebee Pir and you dont get any work out of it,many people may have it done just because its free, and haveh no intention of having anything rectifed or improved,

im with cliffed on this one, normally 120 quid on a small to medium sized domestic. no way would i get out of bed for no promise of pay or follow on work. a PIR is a document which is used to assess that an installation is still suitable to serve the purpose it was designed for so, i reckon this cant be properly done in under half a days work so i say let the fool do it for ÂŁ12 quid! maybe he'll get to change a dodgey socket or so per house......big deal. OP, dont undersell yourself!

Sounds about as reliable as a free MOT on your car..... everyone has to make money but who wants to earn it like that??!! I think most people with half a brain would be very suspicious of a price like that aswell.........

The problem here is where do you stop?

Do you install a new consumer unit for ÂŁ50.00 because the client has hinted that he/she might have a few extra sockets and some downlights installed?

Of course you can set your own pricing structure but this one seems very short term and amateur.

They dont realise how many students houses there are down just one road.
Bottom line is, you do them for free your going to have the Part Pee taken mate.
i know you can get wasted in the club for ÂŁ20 still in wales!
Your selling yourself short BUTT.

I hear what you're saying Mike2790 about underselling a service. Maybe I'm really jammy but whenever I do a PIR I almost always get at least a couple hundred quids work out of it. It's dog eat dog out there at the moment. You come on here during the day and you see there are plenty of sparks sat at home at the moment with little work to be getting on with.
