domestic surge protection

done a job lately for nedl, 200 houses in gateshead had a 500v power surge cos some thieving scrote robbed some copper from a sub that feeds the houses. people lost tv, computers, phone chargers, boilers etc anything with a circuit board. As we were testing the houses prior to the power going back on people were asking if they could protect against this happening again. I know you can get surge protectors that would fit in line between the meter and the cu but does anybody have any experiance of fitting them and good brands, prices and where to get them.
I have seen some on line but they look like they come pre wired with 2.5 tails and I want an in line unit not a 4 gang extention that you plug your computer into.

check the bgb as this is part of the new regs which are required as of 1/1/12, but can be worked to now.

Surge protection isn't and won't be required on your average domestic premesis and the BGB confirms this, however, there is nothing to stop you fitting one anyway.

Hager do a range that are supposed to be rather good. Ideally you want to be using a class 3 in-line on any individual circuits that are likely to supply sensitive equipment and a class 2 in-line between the meter and CU. Class 1 SPD's are primarily used for lightning surge protection.

I must add that I'm no expert therefore you should really be consulting with the manufacturers so that you can see what would best suit your needs as all manufacturers have different ranges and all with different specs.

We fit spd by Phoenix Contact. Occupies a 32A circuit in the board. Honestly don't know how they work, but we fit them in DAB transmitter installs, so should be sensitive enough for a domestic install. If your interested, I'll try and get some spec sheets.

would be interested in the spec sheets. I am a little concerned about installing or not these SPD's for domestic installs (new or old/replacements). Spoke to the NIC last wek and they prety much said do a risk assessment for domestic, in my mind this new regs seem alittle wooly, and also sems that too many people /installers know too much about them( that' sthe new 2012 regs SPD's) and then to top it off he then said there where 3 types??

Sorry but really not too sure, but from the past answers it suggest that most domestic installs will not require SPD

please could you help on this

every install on the treatment and pumping sites i work on are also fitted with these. I beleive that they have a system where any overvoltage is dumped to earth.
As above, the water comapny have no problems with them
