when wiring/ connecting down lights do you use a jb with H/R flex or connect the twin and earth.

mains downlighters:

JB and HR flex ( although standard round JB's are deemed 'bad' now under 17th edition due to lack of cable clamps to prevent strain on the cable...Hager make a good JB designed for this purpose that works very well. )

LV Downlighters:

a lot of transformers available now accept the T/E cables directly without the need for a jb. look for those ( IBL, aurora, jcc make them and save a lot of time ) otherswise same as above

I do use a small JB with H/R flex its accessible if the light is taken down, but I have been looking at the wago and helocon connectors to see if if would save time but you can only use solid strands not flex (unless you buy the more expensive cage clamps), It would cost to much to use a H/R cable solid core.

sure. wago's are the way forward! actually wago make an inexpensive connector that takes a solid ( 1 or 2 ) in one end and a flex in the other end. i found it in the green selection box they do. you could put those in a 'choc' box to save time

I always use 17th edition J/Bs,spot on for downlighters

16 Amp Downlighter Junction Box
The IEE Wiring Regulations state that terminals shall not be subject to undue stress,
i.e. taking weight of cables or fittings.
Currently a high proportion of Junction Boxes are installed behind Downlighters or
decorative light fittings, where moving the Junction Box in to position after wiring
could cause stress on the terminations.

With the NEW Ashley J501 Junction Box, these obstacles can be overcome.

Ashley can provide a quick and easy means of connecting fixed wiring to flexible cables of downlighter fittings based on 3 main benefits:

1. Easy to use
2. Wide application suitability
3. Compliance with latest regulations

I hated these when they first came out but they are really good and fairly quick, the clamp could do with a bit of redesign though

Spot on there mate. Me and the gaffer did 34 downlights 2day. Never could have done that in 1 day without the wago's! Green selection box and plastic choc boxes 4 connections. Strip connectors are on their way out!! :D:D:D

Sry to be off Topic here but are the round JB,s not good to use now in the 17th Regs ?

if their not what 4 way JB,s are compliant with the 17th ?

They are still a currently legal if used in the correct manner, if you want to use them they should be fixed to a surface as well as the cables so that there is no strain on the terminations, obviously this cannot be achieved if you are shoving them through a downlighter hole.
However, if you use junction boxes like the J501 which a picture is shown earlier in this thread then they are ok as the cables are clamped as they enter the junction box.
They are a bit more expensive than the old round ones but thats progress

Have you guys seen the new LinE Junction Box. BRILLIANT.
At ELEX Exeter guy wired 5 cable (loop in, loop out, switch, 230V lamp, 230 V lamp) in 2mins33!! If using push in connectors why use boxes designed for terminal strip.
TOOL FREE, 17th ed etc..... Home
