Greetings.
A friend of mine wants downighters in the kitchen.
His kitchen ceiling is plasterboard with tongue and groove wooden panneling on top.
You kow the sort of thing, he wanted to make it look like a ships cabin so put thin battens on the plasterboard then stained tongue and groove wooden boards on top of those.
The effect is that he has a wooden ceiling.
The trouble is if I try to fit downlighters I don't think they will be long enough to go through the wooden ceiling and through the plasterboard, I think the springs that anchor the downlighters will not make it all the way through.
So my question is does anyone know where I can get extra long downlighters that can be put through a ceiling that is thicker than just plasterboard.
Cheers.

They will fit i have done a job that has the exact same thing a small batton the cladded to the battons the only advise i would give you is to use the fire rated with low energy lamps and when you issue the certificate specify low energy lamps , you know how hot down lighters are so you need to keep the temperature to a minimal the fittings i used were Robus fire rated ,plus for added protection i placed a fire hood in the hole to. i know it was over the top but better than the cladding catching fire

Hi Can I add to the question .. I need to wire some mains fire rated downlights .. I have been told the cable from the down light needs to have a csa of 1 or more and I will use a chocolate box to make the conection to the mains .. what cable do I need to use? how long should the tail be and does the cable need to be heat resistant ... the job needs to be sighned off. I think there will be about 20 downlights in all they have been bought and not pre wired. Any help would be great thanks. ps can I use 1.5 twin and earth

Have a look at the JCC fire rated range , they have two sets of spring clip slots on the side to adjust for ceiling thickness and their halogen fire rated downlights are safe in a flammable ceiling or so I was told by their tech dept about a year ago

use 1.5mm T/E . for each downlight fit a 2" junction box to the T/E looped from one to another in a daisy chain and wire from each to the fitting in flex. That way, as the J/Bs will fit through the hole in which the fittings are installed, they are "accessible"

Thanks .. I should have said the downlights are replacements for exsisting non fire rated downlights .. so all I need to do is conect the tails in an approved way. with the correct wire and block. Thanks again

Your downlights may have the loop in loop out conection fitted so just do that.

If you decide to use your chocolate box then place them in a suitable enclosure and do not just tape it up, cos thats rough as a badgers ---

@ david amp, im a tad worried you use the term 'chocolate box' and 'badgers ---', hope this aint a trend lol.... it may give the wrong impression.:rolleyes:;)

This is the light fitting I am using .. I say I am but it is for my sister and I haven't seen them yet she has bought 15 to replace existing downlights (not all in the same room).
She has been told by the project manager that in order to be signed off the cable has to have a csa of 1 or greater and the existing wires need top be properly terminated as they are floating about ,, not sure what he means as I haven't seen it yet .. prob next w/e.

I understand from what you have said you would rather I didn't use a terminal block inside a chocbox, but rather a junction box.

Hi I am going to wire in the said downlights later today, can I use the old colour twin and earth cable I had leftover .. it is the old colour red black green/yellow or will that mean it wont be signed off? .. I don't mind buying new cable .. just don't like to waste cable.

Thanks
