Downlighters--------help please.

Ok here the deal, ive never put downlighters in a lounge of a 3 bedroom house. Wondered if anyone had tips on installing them as ive only done them in bedrooms where im able to get access to ceiling from loft.When it comes toa downstaires room i figure only way to work out not to hit beams is to take a measurement inbetween the beams and measure from where existing rose pendant is so not to be anywhere near a beam??? Just some hint and tips would help to execute this job ive been offered. Thanks in advance.Luke

normally i'd have to lift a board anyway - 'crossing' the ceiling joists

so i'd take a look with the flashlight above for obstacles and cross-pieces etc. and joist location

mark out your lights avoiding joists

i usually poke a screwdriver around before drilling-to be on the safe side

Usually use a strong magnet ( the one off the super rods set ) then mount it on a rod and wave it slowly across the ceiling until you get a bite, ie a drywall screw or nail then you can work out where the joists are.

One thing i do is when every thing is marked out between the joists , use a peice of card board and cut a hole in it with your hole saw then try the down lighter in the card board just to ensure you cut the right size hole , not easy to patch up a hole thats to big
