Hi all

Been asked to instal my first set of downlighters. The customer has purchased non fire rated mains supply but these are to be fitted into insulation therefore i feel I should install fire hoods is this correct?

I'm assuming that if fire rated version then they do not require hoods and what about LV types?

Thanks as always

Rammie

The steepest learning curve of my life!

Fit fire hoods AND remove insulation from around the hood - the hoods aren`t designed to have insulation dumped on top of them anymore than fire rated units are. ELV versions are the same.

& no, fire rated units don`t need fire-hoods, nor are they designed with them in mind - so don`t !

:D

They wouldn`t be the first customer to try to save themselves a few quid by buying their own gear - only to find that ends up costing them more ÂŁ`s
Do you want to tell em that or should I?

i install the metal fireguards in these situations allowing insulation to stay in situ ;)

Yup, Flukey, a good product - if a little pricey (have thought of starting to make em meself actually - the BS markings might not be too legible tho :D)

I`d assumed no access could be (easily) gained from above, so didn`t suggest em. They`re buggers to shove thru 3" holes

havent had a problem selling them yet, must be a good salesman :p

havent found a loft i cant fit in yet either ;)

same old story customer trying to save ÂŁ by buying own gear

i had one on last job she bought lights from next

wanted them dimmed i got her the dimmer before she bought the lights

in big letters on the instruction sheet "these lights are not to be used with a dimmer"

can i take the dimmer back to the wholesalers then

i want to use a dimmer anyway she said

Hate people like that, installed 12 garden lights last year. Customer supplied them from some cheap shop, I said any probs/call backs he will be charged. Think he has had 3 visits since they went in.

Had a woman the other day who had bought her own non fire-rated downlighters from b&q and wanted them installing in her living room.

"But the man at B&Q told me I could have them, and he WAS an electrician"

Wonder how you get a job there?

Thanks to all as always for your responses...all very useful! AND as some of you suggested been back to the customer today explaining the situation and his first response was regarding the additional cost....ah well!
