Downlights in lathe and mortar (replacing ceiling)

I recently done a job fitting downlight in lathe and mortar. I pre-warned the customer of the perils of doing this and the possible damage.

Anyway, cut a long story short, the holes I drilled have since cracked along the lathes and the customer has rang me to ask if I would carry out remedials... No problem, I want her to be happy. So, I have offered to put in a new cladded ceiling and refit downlights for half my normal daily rate. She is pleased with this...

Just need clarification of the best approach to this:

The job is an upstairs bathroom, I want to knock out all the old lathe and use existing joists to batten and fit cladding to. Is there a better approach to this ? Cladding is MDF.

Do not under any circumstances pull the existing ceiling, if you do the mess will probably destroy the bathroom. I personally wouldn't bother with cladding I would just OVERBOARD the ceiling with hdlf inch plasterboard and get my usuall plasterer to skim it. It would take me about 2 hrs to overboard the ceiling and the plasterer would normally charge me less than £100 to skim it hey presto nice smooth ceiling. If you really must clad it then overboard with half inch ply then clad it

Trouble with overboard is I will the struggle with fitting her downlights. Any suggestions ?

Stuey Asbestos possibly in ANY property Take care ask your L.A. if they do a free test re asbestos

As Mogga said you can find it in any property before it was found to be harmful to health.

Just how she wants it mate. Picked up the cladding today, tis really nice stuff actually.

Fire rated and IP56. Cladding is good for 110 deg.

So you can't put downlighters in lathe and plaster ceilings at all due to asbestos. ?

Ceiling is probably newer than 120 year old house. I would go for overboard and skim as well. Then before recutting downlight holes i would go above and remove a large portion of the old ceiling around the downlight holes so that they only grip onto the new plasterboard. But do this before the re skim or you may damage the new ceiling, i speak from experience

Will do this. Exept I will use the cladding, just never thought of removing the old ceiling just above the lights.
