Very curious about this one.

Most sparks I know use this method for rewires, whether the cable run is under a floor or down a wall cavity, but is it actually compliant with the current regs?

The regs say that cables must be supported for their full length. Does "lying on the ground below the floorboards" constitute being "supported". Equally, does resting on the notches in joists?

Got a job coming up fairly soon involving replacing a load of 50s wiring in a terraced house, much of which is run under the floorboards. Short of pulling up the entire floor and nailing my cables every 30cm I'm not sure how is best to proceed.

I know realistically I could use the old method and no-one would be any the wiser, just wanted to at least "consider" doing everything 100% by the book!

Do you actually worry about numby stuff like this??

I had to read your post twice, i couldn't believe what i was reading ...lol!!

I wonder if doing everything 100% by the book, has ever been achieved on a complete installation, New build or on a rewire etc... ?? wouldn't mind betting it hasn't!! lol!!
by what book?...oh you mean BS7671...that guidance note........lol.....

Give me a break mate! Just trying to do things as right as possible!

I remember a thread a while back when some poor sod got a load of hassle because he'd been fishing new switch drops down a cavity and was told he was "breaking the rules" because they weren't supported.

I always do the job according to my judgement of the situation. In this case I'll be drawing cables through with the old ones where possible as I was always taught on site (although it differs to what I was taught in the classroom!)

Effectively, the thread was just to see if anyone else had any sensible alternatives or tips that I might not have been aware of!

I keep hearing people slagging off non-apprenticeship sparks for doing cowboy installs, so I thought I should get some additional opinions to make sure I do a reasonable job!

Ok here is my take on this if you clip a cable along a ceiling do you fix it clip to clip or do you leave a space between them ? My guess we all leave a space but put them close enough to make it look right so if you are placing a cable through holes in the joists then as long as it supports the cable and looks right then its fine. As for laying on the ground under a house it would not be my first choice but I am not here to tell lies I have had to do it sometimes because its not always possible to clip it all the way. I am an old fat git now and there is no way I can get my 48 inch waste under a 12 inch gap.

I have said it before and I will say it again the guys writing the regs have little or no knowledge of actually wiring anything only a mathematical knowledge of what things can do cables carry when a fuse should blow but they can not give a guarantee when it actually will blow these are safeguards that can still fail even if followed to the letter. I have seen a 40A mcb carry 125A and it nor the 100A hydro fuse blew so dont take every thing you read as gospel.

I hate it when cables are clipped or tied together in bunches then hidden away somewhere inaccessible.
I see no problem with resting cables on ceilings or on dry ground.
Only time I consider it dodgey, is where there's a suspended grid ceiling.
