Hi all,
I'm looking for just a little advise ...

During my last test on Building Regulation (part P) / BS7671 / Guidance note 3 of my on-line course I find this question:

Question 03: When drilling holes in joists, the maximum diameter of the hole must not exceed:
A 0.25 x joist depth
B 0.35 x joist depth
C 0.50 x joist depth
D 0.75 x joist depth

I searched on the net and I have found that the correct answer is the letter A (0,25 x joist depth) but I'm not able to find this information on the correct above documents, where should I look ??

the only link for me is with the chapter 52 (selection and erection of wiring system) but I didn't find it yet ...:confused::confused:

Thanks for your help.

Building reg A off top of my head as its about structure of building

Totally wrong about that - interesting read though. Will keep looking. Got it in most of the C+G books but that doesn't count!

Good point, I'll try to download it and I take a look...
Anyway I didn't read it in my course books, I'll give them another look ... but I have still the doubt of the original information source...

Thank you.

I just read through it - it's all about structure but not about drilling for cable access

I do not believe that the specifications for drilling and notching joists is shown in any of: Part P approved document (or any approved document for the building regulations), BS7671 or Guidance Note 3.

The figures are specified in guidance note 1, the On site guide and the electricians guide to the building regulations.

Unfortunately none of them reference where this information came from.
However since they are specified in an IET document they should have relevance to your course.

Bs5268-2 apparently with BS8103-3 providing diagrams showing the application of said BS5268-2 regarding guidance. Good question posed - had a bit of a Columbo moment to find the answer. To bed - the wife's calling and I'm working tomorrow.

They have never provided me with the guidance note 1, probably it's not included in the price of the course ... sigh!
But it's a good idea collect all the seven guidance note for the next future.

Thanks for your help both of you.

I would just stay with the BS7671, guidance note 3 and the On Site Guide at the moment until you know you need any of the other guidance notes.
Whilst they can be very useful they are not really necessary in most cases and should not be required for training.
