Use distilled (white) vinegar mate it doesn't leave that horrible brown stain that you often get with malt vinegar.

I would say be careful when you're doing the IR test...
... but if the sides were metallic you'd be able to clip onto it.
No but if the body of the kettle were metal (which in this case it isn't otherwise there would be somewhere to clip the wander lead when doing the earth continuity) you'd get 500v on the body of the kettle, so care should be exercised.The wander lead doesn't play any part in a Class I IR test, so wouldn't need to be held against anything for the IR test to complete.
re. limescale. those kettle descalers just don't work. brick acid ( HCl ) from builders' merchants, ÂŁ4.60 for 5l. cuts the mustard on limescale.
