Earth leads

Hi

Can someone advise me if earth leads from the socket to the earth lug on the boxes are required in a domestic scenario with twin and earth as the wiring? I was told that they are no longer needed if the metal box has fixed lug. I had not heard of this before. If this is the case can someone point me in the direction of the Big Red Book or OSG as to which regulation covers this. . . . . thx in advance

There is no specific regs telling you to earth the back box, however the NIC will tell you that if one of the lugs are fixed then a fly lead is not required. I and many others on this forum will fit them anyway for good measure, equally many on this forum do not.
For the sake of an extra 30 seconds popping one in, I do it every time.

I must admit I do this as second nature and have done for the last 30 years, but find things extremely frustrating when I get advised it's not required. I would of got a clip round the ear as a nipper by my spark if I did not put a lead on.

rouke is right.belt and brases.best to fit fly leads.

Yep my old man has been in the game for around 30 years, and he too would still clip me round the ear if I didn't do it!! After all, the boxes have an earth terminal on them, so it may as well be used!!

. . . . so are we saying that in essence it is good practice but there is no reg that covers it?

Providing the metal backbox has at least one fixed lug.

I'm another who always does it though.

Not required when using T&E if the box has a fixed lug but it is still good practice to fit fly lead.
Only time fly lead is required is when a steel conduit / trunking system is used as a cpc without seperate cpc conductor.

is not a requirement if the front plate is plastic, but if the actual front is metal then a link should be fitted

The only place I have ever read anything on this topic, other than forums is in GN1 (havnt got it to hand) but seem to remember it being bout half a page and basically says its good practice but does not go as far as to say it should be done!
