I thought there would have to be a certain 'Green Deal' element in EWI? Not funded completely

TBH I haven't really paid a lot of attention to it

well you should its bigger than the pv

people in fuel poverty will benefit from eco most unemployed low income earners etc

also social housing will have money to throw at it

The best thing you can do with a lot of these poor efficient housing stock is to pull it all down and rebuild.

On another note, I'm not any expert on insulation but a lot of these houses where built on the cheap in the 60 &70s and if you plug every nook and cranny with insulation and stop any airflow it will cause detrimental health concerns with the inhabitants and also the integrity of the building.

Not true unfortunately, unless you're counting Green Deal in all of this. EWI through ECO is targeted at specific areas and customers. Last time I spoke to SSE they didn't think private householders would be able to take advantage of EWI through Green Deal because they wouldn't be able to get the economies of scale that social housing providers get and so the 10k through GD wouldn't cover the costs. of course this will change as the market matures but I think we're a good few years off that.

I'm happy to be corrected, but that's my latest interpretation of GD via the group we have working together in our area.

*alarm bell*

Fitting external wall insulation is notoriously difficult to get right, and isn't something anyone should start doing without seriously researching it, doing some test installations, and really getting the detailing right before rolling it out.

There was a company in Goole that did dozens of hours for the council without knowing what they were doing, and ended up with water pouring down the backs of the insulation because they'd got the detailing wrong at the top and around the windows, leading to severe damp problems and them having to go back and rip it all off and do it properly at their own expense, which must have cost them into the millions.

There is a reason they're classed as hard to treat houses.

if you think about it, on a lot of houses you're going to have to remove and then reinstall guttering, drainpipes, waste pipes, gas flues etc then with each window and door fitting you have to actually get the detailing right, so fitting basically new window surrounds on all windows that you're sure aren't going to leak between the EWI and the wall. Get it wrong and it's a major headache to put right afterwards.

We're contemplating getting involved, but very slowly at first to ensure we get it right if we do go down that line, and I'm pretty wary about it and the risks of getting it wrong tbh.

If you have no background of it don't do it
my co director is a plasterer rendering company so EWI isn't a problem to take on as he knows what risks can be involved

fair enough, in that case yes I'd agree it would be a very sensible move for your company.

probably less so for most on this forum unless they can bring on board that sort of expertise. We've been gradually training our guys up on the job on internal wall insulation in quiet periods over the last year, and work with a plasterer for those jobs who can do rendering and bring a team on for that side if we decide to go down that line, plus we've got plumbing/ heating experience for moving any pipework etc.

It's going to be quite a major step though, but I agree the demand is going to be there from ECO funding.

We looked into it but it didn't seem a good idea to get involved with it. We plan on working with an insulation firm and they are moving into this line of work.

Part of our group of Green Deal installers is a building SME with an excellent reputation for eco building. They are sitting on the fence because it's going to be an extra 9k for the appropriate training to get them to the required standard for ECO and environmentally friendly building has been their trade for a number of years. I'm taking my lead from them, if they need to spend 9k it would cost us a lot more than that, we just have plastering experience.
