daverogers

Good evening all. I have had a new customer contact me about a EICR he received. (unwillingly) One of the items in the report is "Cooker switch over hob C2"

Now I agree that the cooker switch should never be over the hob as its not designed to be there ie external influences and you will just simply burn the hell out your arm.

Would you class this as a C2? I can see some reasoning as you can burn yourself and the switch can melt. I have not seen the installation myself so I cannot say.

Now am I correct in thinking there is no need for local isolation of the cooker. A BSEN60898 can be considered the isolator which can be locked off. There is the issue of emergency switching if the designer deems it necessary.

Anyones thoughts on this

cheers all:phone:

C3

you can allways isolate from DB in emergency.

would put it down as C3 and recommend it being repositioned

60898 is not double pole so don't think that's suitable for isolation purposes

and the same for any other piece of fixed equipment. you need an isolator close by for maintenance purposes

Thanks Shock.

I was contemplating using a MF JB to remove the old switch and possible installing it in the electric cupboard with the cu or just leave it to the MCB. I am just trying to see if my way of thinking here is off. I always seem to second guess myself lately. :(

Is it not the live conductor only which needs to be isolated and the MCB complies with this. The isolation just needs to be locked while maintenance is carried out no?

The local isolation as far as I can remember is for situations where you cannot garentee that the circuit will not be energized as well as not to interrupt other current using equipment on the same circuit.

Thanks for all your help btw

I have been instructed by one of the scammer scheme bodies that a cooker switch located directly above a cooker hob classed as an external heat influence warrants a C2 departure if the switch incorporates a readily useable socket. If it is a stand alone switch a C3 is more appropriate.
Thoughts?

Sounds about right to me

Every cooker i have ever installed has asked for a double pole switch for isolation. Manufacturers instructions supersede 537.2.1.1

and me. if it's a concern, i would remove the switch, wago the cables and fit a blanking plate.

Came across a situation once where the switch located above the halogen hob was removed and wago'd with cotton wool stuffed in the back box and blanked off. Pulling out the cooker i found the cooker low level outlet had been removed and replaced with the switch from above and the cooker rammed up against it. Logic in that?

got to have the cotton wool , you know, insulation reinstatement. can't let a few units of warmth escape into the next room, they might fly through an open window and aggravate global warming.

Cotton wool is perfect in those situations. Acoustics and all that.

Seriuosly tho thanks for all your insight. As always.
