I've recently had a complete rewire. It's been a nightmare. Electrician called back once because cables not properly chased in and some wires left exposed. Now I am securring the floorboards he had taken up and cables are running in the same groove cut into the joists for the central heating pipes. I've asked a plumber who says this is not acceptable.

I could cut another notch in the joist to seperate the cables from pipes, but this would still mean the cables are sitting just under the bedroom floorboards. Is this acceptable? I have been told it will make my completion certificate invalid.

Should I get him back to rerun the cables through the joists (holes are allready there from previous wiring)? To be honest I have little faith in him, but I have little money too and can't afford another contractor.

Any advice?

yeah, but that was then. nowadays with these scams, if you know brown from blue, you're in , as long as the ÂŁ500 is paid.

I have to disagree somewhat with this. Although the guy was brilliant, my assessment with Elecsa was damned hard work. I was grilled on every aspect of BS7671, along with the building regs. I then had to demonstrate numerous testing procedures and explain the purpose they served. I got a clean sweep and was very proud of myself, but my point is that there was no way I'd have got through it without knowing what I was doing.

Sorry I missed that mate. I agree that after seeing some "competent persons" work, I am amazed how they ever joined a scheme.

we`v come across wrong polarities n all sorts done by supposed `competent persons`....just the other day it was interlinked smokes n heats i found....conductors not identified, wrong polarity....that was 2 non-conformances straight off..lol.....

Sounds like one of these "I can wire a house in a day" guys. Cables in notches is ruff ruff ruff! That said, good luck getting him to redo it if the whole house is like that. He'd have to do the whole job again. If theres earth bonding to water and RCD protection, its not particularly dangerous so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

And why the hell does every single thread degenerate into a rant about part P? What in the hell has this got to do with part P? Its just a sparky whos more concerned about speed than quality. Its not like he wouldn't be doing the exact same thing if part P didn't exist now is it?
Broken records
yawn...

I was merely making a point that the assessor I had was very thorough in making sure that I understood the regs, both electrical and building. As Dave says tho, it's not about blagging your way into a scheme, it's about how you work. No different to a driver who goes at 30 mph on his test, then does 70 mph and runs red lights through town once he's passed.
