Electric charger - lack of access to fuse box

Hello all,

I need to have an electric car charger installed but at the moment I'm puzzled about what my options are.

My garage is at the back of my house (access through a back road) which begs the question, with the electric car charger installed there,do we need to run a cable to the electric board? The fuse board is under the stairs at the front of the house and access is nearly impossible as it would have to run the garden, kitchen (walls have cabinets top and bottom), completely (floor-to-ceiling tiled) bathroom and to the understairs area (where we have a water tank blocking access from bathroom to electrical board). we are talking 20+ metres too.

I have wifi and power in the garage (8 power sockets)

What solution have i got here?

Ask an EV installer to give you a quote. It's impossible to tell from my living room.

It looks as though you have a 20amp supply to your garage already, according to what size cable supplies the garage, it may be possible to upgrade the MCB and instal a separate board in the garage to accommodate an EV charger, as above have a word with an EV installer they will be able to advise you.

Whilst your at it, there is a loose earth lead off the earthing block with a terminal on it, I would think this should be connected to something close to it, could be bonding to the adjacent pipe.

The 20m isn't a problem in itself, as cables can be sized to cope with that run.
A regular part of our work is working out how on earth to get a cable from A to B while causing as little mayhem as possible in the middle. You may need to find an electrician with a can-do attitude but there will be one out there in your area that enjoys the challenge. There is usually a way, however impossible it seems.

I'm completely guessing but I wouldn't imagine the existing garage supply will get you very far, as the charger would have to be throttled to (probably) 16 amps which means a longer charging time, and it's likely a data cable would need to be run back tot he main supply to monitor the grid demand in any case.

What type of car have you got/ordered ?
I use a portable charger, can charge as low as 6 amps and the car's maximum is 26 amps. I have a number of adapters so i can charge overnight anywhere even when the supply is substantially weaker than what you may have here.
As mentioned above, you may be able to tolerate a much lower charge rate, if its a hybrid or say a Leaf, rather than a Tesla.
