Hi everyone,

Could anyone help with info regarding a supply for electronic gates, A builder i do a bit for has installed a 2.5 3 core s.w.a. cable and the gate company has installed and wired up controls but would not connect up to mains as they dont do that bit, i have not worked on gates before and was wondering if there was any advice on procedure , i have not seen the job as yet , and was hoping to go there next week a bit more clued up.

Thanks all

your SWA needs to be protected with 16A MCB.Suitable Local Isolation should be provided. How have the gate company programmed the gates with no mains connection? they may have to come back when you have provided the supply.

I would be more concerned about filling out the paperwork, do you know the builder buried the cable deep enough, did he cover it with indentification tape, do you know if it's a full cable or has he joined it.

Do you know how it is run, how long is the run and therefore is it the right size cable. After all once you signed that paperwork that's your reputation on it. Of course if it's domestic and your in England or Wales where do you stand with Part P.

Thanks for the replies lads,
Guess they will have to come back to commission the gates after connection, and thanks for the tip on local isolation, is there any need for r.c.d. protection on gates ?

You may wish to consider malcommansfield comment #3. Neither the builder or the gate company want anything to do with certification and yet both are undertaking electrical work. You are accepting full responsibility for everyone else's work.
I have seen this 100s of times and in the vast majority of cases: "We just do the installation, we don't do the connecting bit" actually means "We are not qualified to undertake electrical work so we get some gullible fool to accept liability for our installations whilst we laugh all the way to the bank."
Your's may of couse be one of the exceptions, or they may be paying you enough to make it worth your while.....

Thanks for the reply bluetobits, yes i have taken on board all comments, the builder concerned is one of the exeptions im glad to say, as you point out, i get plenty of calls from builders/plumbers ect who i have never met wanting someone to sign off some electrical work, wether the have done it or wether a " on the cards " sparky has done it on a sat morning.
I also know some that sign off work without even seeing the completed work.
Un less i can see the supply cable put in by the builder, i wont be signing anything.
