Went to see a job today where there was a double socket with the oven plugged in and the electric hob wired to a 13a plug top plugged in to the same socket. The customer has said it has always worked fine, but now one of the plates is tripping the rcd (probably faulty)

Now I know ideally this hob should be on its own circuit and wired in 6mm t+e. I cant make out what kw the hob is right now because the sticker is worn out, but I know after working out cooker diversity on a 5kw hob, it works out to 13.52a.

Would the plug top be allowed on a new 5kw hob? Or not?

Cheers

but I was referring to the highlighted part about the maximum allowable KW you can plug into a RFC .................

Cant find the reg Malcolm (bet you can though ) but the max amps on a BS1363 is 13A therefore 3Kw and anything above needs to be supplied on its own circuit as we all know.

The op does not know the hob's ratting yet so cant go any further until he finds out. As Glenn says the hob needs fixing first or buy a new one and start from scratch.

to answer your questions

it will need a new hob as one of the elements is faulty.

nope it didn't come with a manufacturers plug top, it has been wired by someone. bit of a dodge job.

i will probably be replacing the hob, and run a dedicated circuit.

was just wondering whether it would be allowed on this set up, but like i said i would rather run a 6mm to 45a switch to cooker connection unit to hob.

if someones put a 13 amp plugtop onto the flex ,the flex must be too big for it to fit into the plugtop
meaning that the hob takes more than 13 amps at full tilt
