I have been asked to instal a specific circuit for an electric kiln, having never done one before, should this be treated the same as a range cooker?

Any assistance gratefully received.

Thanks.

Hi.

Basically all it is is a large cooker.

Follow the manufacturers instructions for supply rating and fuse type etc. Make sure that where it's going has enough capacity for the additional load, select your cable accordingly taking into account ref methods, rating factors and volt drop etc etc and all should be ok.

If its a small kiln they supprisingly dont take alot of power due to the well insulated unit and slow heat-up times, some just run of a plugtop so info is what you need on loading etc.

Thanks guys.

The kiln is to be situated in an outbuilding to which I have to run a new supply. This I was going to run in 16mm cable with a new earth spike and consumer unit, I will then put the kiln on its own 32amp 6mm circuit.

Any other thoughts appreciated.

I have fitted Kilns before ,most have been about 15-18Kw .Connect as a cooker do not allow any diversity,This will then give you a better idea to calculate what size cable and Mcb is required
