Hi all

New here so all this pc stuff don't come naturally with me, antway i'm a fair dab at the D.I.Y caper but
all this 17th ed part p caper gets me a tad.
If i install a shower and run cable from c unit to shower but leave the wire free to be connected bye a registered
sparky is this permitted and would i get the certificate afterwords ?

I would think twice as I didn't see the cable going in mate. There could be 100 junction boxes between CU and shower pull. No guarantee that the cable is ran in inside safe zones etc etc
I thinkyou might struggle to get someone to certificate and notify it.
Sorry if I'm peeing on your fireworks

When we survay a job ...nomatter how big or small......we always take a look first before deciding on the best course of action. This way we cause minimum mess (and fuss) with the least disruption to the occupants. An electrician is going to want to see what the earthing and bonding are like here before proceding with the install as well mate. What type of consumer unit is it ?....

The way around it would be to leave the cable 100% visible along it's route. The Electrician will then be able to see that the cable has been routed correctly.

I would advise getting a Part P registered spark in to give you a quote and discuss with them your intentions. They can then tell you the difference in price and confirm that they are happy to still terminate, test and certify the work.

Post what area you live in as I'm sure a well respected member would quite happily assist you with this:thumbsup

I presume you are looking at cutting costs

(sorry if thats not the case)

You may get a less than honest spark who will unwisely do what you ask,but will struggle to do so because the majority would not take the chance

My advise would be to see if you can offer assistance on the day of install by carrying out the work whilst being supervised by the spark,at least the decisions on routing will be his, cable calculations depend on this and other factots for current carrying capacity and mcb and cable sizing

I will also ask if you are aware of the need that the installation meets the other requirements as mentioned by Glenspark
I am not being dismissive but just in case, are you aware, there is more to installing a shower circuit than the simple act of running a cable in ?

Its of my opinion that in this case you are better just getting an electrician in to do this work. I of course can only advise you as after all its your property were talking about here and its entirely up to you what you choose to do with it. But look at it this way: If and when you decide to use an electrician to do this work you can always watch what he does so in a way its a bit of knowledge for you as well (that is if you dont know/understand sparkying of course)..........

I suggest, that you discuss this with an electrician, before taking any action.
You may well find someone who will be willing to sign off the work, if they have first surveyed the route, and when they return to make the final connections, everything tests out ok.

Sorry guys my ignorance precedes me, it's a job my nephew wants me to do as i'm gutting his bathroom and he wants to put his shower from one end of bath to the other side, all i was goin to do was disconnect the cable
and pull it up into loft and back through at the other end, he has the old style unit, but wants to use mcb instead of
the old fuses, the shower is 9.kw, the existing wire is 10mm and he wants a rocker switch outside rather than pullcord, the wall im knocking out has the existing cable in it with conduit but this is only going a bit further along wall so i think it will be inside zone regulations. But as mentioned i think the best option will be to pass this stage of D.I.Y a pro..........thanks for advise guys it's much appreciated.

Id advise getting a reg spark in for what it will cost and you should have a good safe correctly installed undamaged tested and signed off job done for not that bad a price and if he does the work and is registered then he will also be insured. Not many registered sparks will sign it off if they havent installed it.

hi guys

went in loft today and found the old shower cable, the cable has been disconnected at the fuse box, my nephew said the sparky who did this told him he has left the cable to be re- fit if needed in future ?, should the sparky have given my nephew for doing this ?, he also fit his cooker and fan but didn't leave a certificate this was about 2 years ago

Removing a circuit would not usually entail certification,it has been known in the past for councils and such for traceability purposes or some other obscure reason, but generally no its not required

Reconnecting the cable would require the certification and local authority notification unless someone was to do the job and say nothing

Whether that someone abided by building reg part p and notified or not,its not important safety wise
Safety is ensured by doing all relevant tests by a competent person
