You need to take the size of your shower and divide it by the voltage then check the rating if the cable..

What voltage would you use, and how would you go about cross referencing the cable size, what about termal efects, downrating cables and allowing for BS3036 fuses, volt drop?????

rule of thumb is 9.5kW if cable is clipped direct with a 40A MCB. obviously if cable needs derating due to insulation, the cut-off kW for 6mm would be lower.

I would personally upgrade to 10mm anyway, as most showers these days demand quite a high current.

but I think the figure you're looking for is 8.5kW...

also depends how the cable is run, what length etc

Absolute worst case scenario, ok...

Day to day general thinking, its not exactly relevant. When installing you know when the above becomes relevant because it would be a nightmare of a job.

The OP didn't provide such detail in his question, therefore I provided the basics in my reply. Which you will find is correct.

Edit: Sorry I missed out some of your questions.

Measure voltage at the source, or if a quote go by 230v.

Checking current carrying capacity is checked with whatever table it is in the regs compared with the reference methods and fuse types etc.

Is this sufficient?

Even 10mm can be underated what with all the massive amounts of insulation i have seen going into lofts covering just about everything. method 101 36 amps will just about support 8.5 kw.I would be interested to know if all these insulation companies worry about cable ratings? There are so many things that have to factored in when selecting a cable these days.
