Hi I'm David from Leics area.

Just starting my apprenticeship in a week, can't wait. Over the age for free training and will also have to take exams again even though I done well at school, hopefully I haven't forgot all I learned!

Anyway, anyone got a list of essentials for my toolbox?

Regards

But every days a school day huh ;)

Welcome along mate,

I'd start off with a decent set of drivers, I'm a big Irazola fan, the essential snips, pliars and strippers, usually you can find a good deal on a nice set of all these things, Knipex for me being the absolute king, a volt meter you can trust and from a reliable brand, in time no doubt, a good multi meter, your OSG and BGB will never leave you and spend some money on a GOOD combi drill, I sort of wish that I had an interchangeable hand that I could just screw a drill onto to save time now.

A tool I literally couldn't live without which many don't like but I find essential for speed, is a good set of automatic wire strippers. Saves me a substantial amount of time on certain jobs.

Hope that's of a small use fella.

Ben

Well thanks for the english lesson! lol.

Well I got the job this morning so I purchased some Knipex cutters and pliers, I also went for the Wera interchangable screwdrivers. We're based in Travis Perkins so I got the Milwaukee 18v Combi with 4x 3 amp batteries! All the testing equip is supplied by my firm which is good from a cost perspective. What is an OSG and BGB?

Regards

Congrats there mate,

Got yourself some nice gear too! I had some of those wera drivers but left them on a job and it was just too far to go to get them for it to be worth, cheeky buggers never posted them to me either.

I really fancied a Milwaukee drill but was put off a little by the weight (didnt fancy 20 down lights in a row) nicely built those though.

OSG is your on site guide, your pocket bible and the BRB is the Big green book of regs, BS:7671.

Hope it goes well for you and get off to a flyer buddy

You clumsy little .... (insert your own word here :))

All my tools are pretty much CK, and my powertools are either Makita or Dewalt.

Now look here boyo, i'm not a kid alright, i'm a big boy!

And yea, was a touch foolish to do a job and then leave the customer a complimentary set of new expensive screw drivers too, but thats the kind of guy i am. Thats what they teach you on the short course, always give away your tools.... ;)

A voltage tester 2 pole known as test lamps and dont forget a torch, this is a handy piece of kit but something that people forget to mention,a headtorch can be useful too.If you have a car boot sale near you have a look around there,my last lad went to one and you can get some good gear cheap.on average you pay about 3 quid for a decent full size hacksaw as against about 15 quid in the shops.I like the estwing 20 ounce claw hammer and a 2 pound ball pein hammer plus a lump hammer and bolster if doing domestic.Again hammers and chisels can be picked up cheaply at boot sales, as can power tools if you look carefully, all power tools should be 110 volt.

Just ordered the torch, thank you. Also it is domestic work for a housing association but we have a sub contractor to get me through the commercial sections. What sort of avenues are best to go down after i have finished my apprenticeship and had a couple of years on the tools
