Hi all, I have just received a letter from a company I did some work 15 months ago. He tells me that since my work he has had 3 power cuts that have caused him money due to his feed in tariff, he has had an electrician out who has told him that a loose connection in a 3 phase socket that I fitted has caused the trips and he is asking me for compensation. On installation I Di a full installation certificate an left all in good working order.
Any thoughts on my response to him?

What warranty on workmanship do you give. If 12 months tell him nice try and to jog on

Even if any warranty existed and was still in force,he would have had to contact you to investigate
He can't just get a 3rd party to give an opinion and bill you for sweeties
Go, run, followed by jump, would be one way of responding, at least it would be my way

If you want to respond,do it via the scheme complaints procedure,in which case he would have more success trying to suck cider out of an eggshell

Also, if he had a fault first and foremost he should have contacted you if he expected compensation/rectification before seeking another electrician. Now that someone else has worked on the installation you could claim any possible rights to warranty null and void as you can't guarantee someone else's work or assessment.

Oops Des beat me to it!

I'd of thought a loose wire in one 3 phase socket would just trip it's own fuse/MCB , in which case only the item plugged into it would of stopped. If its blue a fuse on the first occasion and he got a spark out 1 why didn't he phone you so you could check and 2 why didn't the spark check it. 3 like the above comment tell him to jog on, to many variables for him to blame you, the spark might of had the socket off on one of the occasions if you have your results and all ok you have evidence it was ok when you left. Tell him you want to speak to the spark involved.

Aye .... I'm with Des on this one.

The customer should have contacted you in the first instance ..... NOT another (3rd party) spark.

I think by taking the action he did, he's shot himself in the foot.

Ha ha, ok feel much better now, as you said if he had asked me back then I would have had a look , for all I know anybody could have been playing with it over the last year, think ill just reply politely telling him nice try but unlucky.

He should have contacted you at the first power cut, not 15 months later. Dont worry about a thing, he is taking the pee, and trying his luck, its probably fair to assume you wont be going back, so tell hom to poke it where the sun dont shine. You are bomb proof.

Cheers..........Howard
