Electrical Courses on JSA (Leicester)

Hi all I was hoping I could get some advise, I have been out of work since October and I would like to get into the Electrical trade are there any Electrical courses in the Leicester area which are funded by the government.

They only have a limited budget for things like that. My local jobcentre won't let you have anything at all.
Anything they do offer you probably won't be much good; City&Guilds 2377 (portable appliance testing) is a popular one, but there are so many people doing it now it's hard to make any money out of it.

I've heard of people getting C&G 2382 (17th edition) or even C&G2391 (Inspection and testing) paid for by the jobcentre, but on their own they're not worth anything - they won't teach you enough to get a job or set up on your own.

Before the cut backs you could get a grant to let you do the 2330 but as NovusSparkus has stated any funding is now unheard of.

so the government keep releasing statements about unemployment being at an all time high but they aren't offering any incentives or grants to help people get qualified for the good jobs

Some colleges offer a reduction in fees if you're claiming JSA, but you don't get that through the jobcentre. It depends on the college.

I know the college I went if you was on Jsa you only had to pay exam fees around £105 compaired to £1000 if your not check with Leicester college Blank | Leicester College I'm sure they should something similar, hope this has helped.Tom

Cheers for all your replies guys, so what courses in order would you recommend doing to get me on the road to being an electrician, ideally I would like to setup my own business working for myself, I have heard that CFA or something like that is replacing C&G... the reason I ask is that I have been doing to Leicester College and they do offer funding towards courses but they are full until January and thats when the tutor said the new qualification will be available so he wasn't sure on what courses would be available yet.

As others have said, in the current unemployment crisis you would think the government would be actively encouraging further training by providing funding ... even if that was temporary via an low/free interest loan, similar to higher education tuition fees.
One of the most crazy DWP rules is that a person claiming JSA can't do more than 16 hours of training in any period of 7 days, without losing their benefit entitlement, except with special permission from the claimants Jobcentre Plus, Senior Manager. This means that most industry short courses of 3-5 days are therefore generally unavailable to the JSA claimant.

No one has said on here yet, but the one you need first in your case is the 2357 (the 2330 is closed now to year 1 aplicants i think)
