Hi all,

I was wondering if any one can help me please. I have written a question with its answer below but the tutor has asked for the specific answer related exactly to the question. please help.

question : A fault has occurred on the electric shower in one of the rooms. It was reported that
· The shower was switched on
· A crackling sound was heard coming from the shower
· The lights in the room flickered and dimmed
· The shower went off

Describe the likely faults that produce these symptoms.

Answer: The crackling sound is indicative of a loose connection arcing as contact is made and lost. The creation of a sustained arc for a short time could cause a high current to flow in the circuit which would have the effect of dropping the supply voltage to the property and causing the lights to dim. Since the arc is taking a high current the protective device would then operate and cause the shower to stop. Alternatively the arc can have burnt out the terminal / cable so that the temporary contact can no longer be made.

When I done my level3 last year had the same question and I think they just want situations that could cause the fault e.g. Loose connection/failed ip rating/failed element anything really

Probably you should not copy verbatim answers I have given on the forum!
You need to think and apply your own answers.
Crackling sound due to loose connection or short circuit.
Lights flicker and dim as the shower pulls high fault current irregularly.
Shower stops when the MCB or RCD trips or the cable burns out.
