Hello. I'm a 35 year old electrician who has runs his own business in this field and I am looking for some advice on getting onto the oil rigs as an electrician. From what I can gather there are various safety courses that I need to acquire that are not cheap. I'm not sure if there are any electrical course I can do onshore that will help me get a start easier but I know some exist. I am prepared to spend the money and gain all the relevant bits and bobs for me to have a chance of getting a position but I'm worried that even though I might get all the necessary certificates etc that it is a case of who you know because I have no hands on experience.
Please advise and any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

Him.........Obviously I'm trying to run a business.

i went to a career bash thing for aker in aberdeen the other week
the recruitment lass said as a minimum you would need compex to be considered for even yard work
boseit which was the old rgit survival course and mist which you do at the same time and a medical.
your looking at 2K before you kick a ball .
i only went up to see what the lie of the land was cos i thought i was going to have to buy a goat and roll my trouser leg up to get some decent info on this career path.
it is very closed shop as far as i can tell
A lot of ex forces lads are rolling up with all the courses paid for by the mod when they leave for civvy street.
have a read of the offshore thread in jobs section there is some really good info from some of the lads in that one.
im in scotland and i know quite a few lads in different bits of the oil industry but its very hard to get definite good advice from them.
