E

ex RAF

Hi all,

Just wondering if you could help me. I am presently still serving in the RAF as an aircraft electrician (have done 22 yrs), and intend to leave in the near future. I wondered what qualifications and processes I need to become a basic household electrician, and also wondered if there was possibly some of the training/modules I might not need to complete, (as I obviously have a knowledge of how electrics work!). I do have some official civilian qualifications that might be relevant ie. BTEC in aeronatical engineering and a city and guilds in electrical specialism- not sure if these carry any weight at all, but look forward to finding out.

Any advice will be gratefully received, thanks in advance.

Dont bother.
You and a million other career changers have had the same idea to join the Electrical Trainee ranks and start house bashing.
Sounds gloomy i know but just being honest - theres just not enough work to go around.

Isn't avionics a more specialised area than housebashing?
If I were you I'd be looking at sticking with it mate. The electrical world is no bed of roses just now and in the short/medium term is probably going to get harder no matter what sector of it you're in.
You have 22 years experience in a highly specialised field

Many thanks for the responses guys, but there is a reason i want to do it. My father is in the building trade of sorts, and has assured me as much work as I need. As well as which, I will be working for myself on a kind of ad hoc basis, I actually intend to work in a different field of engineering primarily and do the domestic electrics when I can. I just wanted to know what training is required to be "qualified", obviously rules and regs are mandatory as I know hardly anything about them (domestically), but as far as the rest, it would be good to get a heads up what I need to do. I have had a quick look on the internet and have seen that some people are embarking on a 3 year course, which is out of the question for me, but looking at Electrical Qualifications - Qualifications needed to train to become an electrician in the UK pretty much states that I just have to do a load of exams, ie.CG2330/2357/2382 Any further advice would be welcomed.

The absolute bare minimum is the 17th (think it's 2382 but it's late and there's been beer involved)
If you have calibrated test kit, the relevant insurances and up to date regs etc + the requisite amount of jobs to show an assessor+the fee then you're pretty much good to go mate.
