Hi can someone that actually knows what they are talking about please tell me what qualifications i would need to start my own company and work for myself as i cant find this information out anywhere!

I have trained to be a sparky for 3 years and got my level 1 and 2, 2330, 16th edition, i know i need to do my 17th edition regs and 2391 test and inspect, but im not sure if i need my nvq level 3 as some people say i do need it and some say i dont.

I have worked for companies only as a temp and whenever i ask a sparky what do i actually need to make me a fully qualified electrician, their reply is only ever ' sorry mate i qualified years ago, i dont know what the requirements are these days, iv been to the college and asked them and one tutor will say something completely different to another, im getting sick to death of people bull****ting me, all i wanna do is suceed and earn doe lol.

Im fine as far as experience goes, i can do everything with total confidence but thats nothing without the qualifications, but i dont even know what qualifications i need, someone please help me.

Thanks, rob.

i am currently a qualified carpenter, but want to give my self a better chance of employment so am undertaking doin an electrical course (NCS) which would give me the qualifications: 17th edition - C&G 2382, Electrical Portable Appliance Testing - C&G 2377, EAL Certified Domestic Installer and HSE Certificate! I know this is not the full qualification but due to my current job it would give me the grounding to get on the ladder with an electrical company and then i would go for the NVQ 3 in order to become JIB approved.Do you experienced sparkys think im goin the right way about things?

You need 2391 within a year to be full scope with Napit. Even if you do not produce electrical installation condition reports.

Christ...a chippy who want's to be a sparky.....You're gonna get torn to shreds on here dude...You're like the antichrist to these people....

To answer you question
If you wanna work for an electrical company (a big'ish one) then the more qualifications you've got, the better your chances are. Many firms won't even consider you unless you have 2330 or equivalent. Also I should warn you, there are a hell of a lot of newly qualified sparks coming on to the market and I suspect you will find it very difiicult to get a salaried job whatever quals you got. Its an employers market and employers want experienced guys at the mo.

I think this is off the OP orginal topic but is part P a necessity for domestic installers? or could you be fully qualified, registered with NIC/Nappit etc and still have the same 'authority' for lack of a better word, if not more?

A wood butcher becomeing a sparky....the end of the world is nigh *sighs* (on a more serious note get all the qualifications you can and expect most firms willing to take you on to pay low money for awhile (trainee type wages) so makesure you can cover the lack of your usual income)

Part P: is all about Domestic work so yes it is a necessity if you do alot of Domestic as it will save money, No Part P and you have to pay alot more to LABC every job you do.

cheers Dave85, Swicade, i know a few ppl who are dicing with death, (doing electrics with no quals and they get a qualified sparky to sign their work off) I'm in the loft conversion business and would rather gain the full qualification for electrics as i would be able to do everything myself and save money in the long run! Also whilst being on this forum i've read that they could be scrapping the 2330 do any of you guys know if this is true and what other course i could look at? i take it that the NVQ you have to be in the business to gain this qualification so just after some of your experience as to know im on the right course? Cheers once again for your comments!!

thanks for all the replies, so if i wanted to work for a company i would need my nvq lvl 3 17th edition and 2391 but if i want to work for myself as a domestic installer what do i need? please keep as simple as u can as some people do ramble on about totally irrelevant stuff lol

thanks again people

Good grief ! we've answered those questions on the first page !

This climate, 2357 is the way to go!! I think the DI courses are a mixed bag of tricks teach you the bare essentials, nothing more! Unfortunately, seen by some as the easy road to sparkydom :-(

You need 17th edition plus part P full scope & 2382. You do not need to join any of the scammers, you can notify your work directly to your local building control. Depending where you live and how much your local building control charge you per notification will sway you as to whether or not you will be better off joining 1 of the scammers. I know plenty of electricians that have joined NICIEC without 2391, although they do ask that you are working towards it. But at the end of the day they want your money and will accept you without 2391
