I'm going to post some videos from you tube that are driving me mad.
As a lecturer, I concentrate on delivering material clearly and effectively. I watched a couple of videos last night and I was just getting more and more annoyed with them. Either by content, inaccuracy or simply just bad delivery for the viewer..

I have no personal vendetta with any of the companies/individuals and the opinions I post are my own :p. Some will be electricians, some will be tutors, even a bit of Chris Kitcher, Tony Cable and Dave Austin might crop up ;)

I'll post a video and keep editing my post with my opinion, but I'll give you guys an opportunity to point some things out first..

Each video I will post with a number (Video 1, Video 2 and so on..) so if you post just put the video number in your post so we don't get completely messy in the thread.

If any of you are the creator of these videos, this is just a bit of fun. Please feel free to use it for your own benefit improving the advise you offer..

The order I post these up will be completely random.

So with the house light ON we take off the top of the "fuse box, sorry we call it a consumer unit" poke around a bit whilst looking the other way and telling everyone not a lot.
1) Safe isolation
2) why replace the CU, whats wrong with a fuse box
3) what about bonding
4) what about testing beyond functional to see if it works
5) What about the missing blank that you can stick your finger through
....
and much more
As a video on how to change a consumer unit 0/10
As a video on why / what advantages / disadvantages of a 17th ed consumer unit Not many out of ten.
Wonder if anyone from NIC watch these?

Oh yes! Oh yes! You can count on Churchill :)

Widdler... it was well worth the wait.
The NICEIC sticker/lables are purple. I think that the NICEIC have a differing colours depending on what status the inividual is,ie full scope member ect. Can anyone shed any light in the colour purple he uses.
Is this part of a wind up though?
Kindest regards
Mike

Heya mate, you are correct. The NICEIC have different colours for their labels.

Red = Approved Contractors
Purple = Domestic Installer
Green = Working outside their scope or currently applying for registration.

Ok, my observations for VIDEO 2 are:

  • Confusion with terminology throughout. Fusebox/Consumer unit. Clearly English isn't this gentlemens first language so I won't make a big point of it
  • Describes the downlight as a 'fire proof mechanism urgh hood that goes onto the actual light'. No mention of the fitting providing a BARRIER FOR A TIMED DURATION.
  • Apparently they provide a protection against fire because the downlights get really hot?
  • No mention that you don't have to use a transformer, and not using transformers will mean transformers will not blow in the first place.
  • Isolation Procedure = No power at light. Switch light on to prove tester works. Then turn off at the local switch and then the MCB. Then re-test at light to prove completely dead....... How do you know you have isolated the correct MCB?? What about locking off??
  • Bare connector blocks above ceilings are 'illegal'?
  • Cameraman avoids showing footage of the downlight being installed, it just focus' on the guys face?

A quick skim through VIDEO 3

  • Old rewireable type fuses - Whats wrong with them?
  • Part P fusebox. What the hell is that?
  • Why doesn't he go on to explain Part P?
  • His RCBO description is completely incorrect.
  • Cover off the board with the power still on!
  • Missing blank
  • NIC standards. What are they?
  • Decides next inspection will be 5 years because it's a new wire?
  • No mention or illustration of certification and notification.
