Hi Guys,

I've been asked to change a fused Db to a 17th Ed Cu, fit some emergency lighting and carry out a PI in a commercial property. I am a newly qualified and as of yet i have not registered with a Competent persons scheme.
The users of the property have said that the HSE officer has stated that the work must be done by a Niceic registered electrician. So to the point, do you need to be registered to carry out electrical work in a Commercial property?

I look forward to all your comments !!

How can they specify an NICEIC registered electrician? I suppose they can tell you what make of van to drive too :)

The person issueing the contract can specify whatever they want (within reason) - even if there are no regulations stipulating it.

Its the same as, say, the NICEIC asking for things that are not in 7671, they set the rules, and you have to jump.

I once specified in a contract that I was issueing that only full length trousers were to be worn on site... (there was a good reason, please don't ask)

I suspect there is a reason why you had to wear long trousers (knobbly knees?) but surely they have to have a reason why NICwas chosen...is it not discrimination?

I don't think so - its like specifying a corgi registered plumber when you only want 2 taps changed - you may not need the registeration for the job but you can use the fact that someone is registered as proof of compantancy.

Thanks for the info so far Guys...its so frustrating when I know I can do the job, but have to jump though extra hoops in order to do it when its not necessary. Don't get me wrong I understand the need to be registered in order to carry out work in a Domestic property's and I intend to get register in the near future, but Part P does not extend to commercial properties.

I am going to put in a quote anyway and see what happens....wish me luck

You could do the job and get it certified by a niccy/eca etc registered elec...if your qualified to do the install I can see no reason why you shouldn't
