I have been applying to companies for 2 years now, I have my Electrical Installation 2330, 17th Edition, and currently taking my 2394 and 2395 Testing and Inspection. I have no experience because I can't get a Job as an electrician due to no experience, how do I get into the Electrical Trade, is there anyone out there who can help me. I am fresh out of college and would really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thank you

find the local paper look up the adverts for electricians, text the local sparks and offer to work for free in exchange for some learning and lunch. not many people can turn down a free hand, do this enough times and you might get somewhere, and even if you don;t you should have gained some experience

big companies are not interested because they have to train you and do stuff because of health and safety and the suchlike, a small business will just take the chance and let you shadow them, you could also find a list of local electrical wholesalers and chat to the guys that work there and they might be able to help you out, as they know who has just landed the big jobs as they will be ordering stuff from them, but word to the wise ask people if it is a good time to speak to them, nothing worse than someone pestering you when you are busy. good luck!

can you handle a hacksaw? a hammer and bolster? ect
are you a hands on person?
if you cut your finger what do you do-
go running to the first aid box or just use a bit of insulation tape?
are you proficient in car or mechanical repairs?
can u cut trunking at the correct angles

glloyd, I really wish you the best. Two years is a long time so you are obviously dedicated. All I can do is explain where I think you are and what options you may have. Firstly Big and medium size companies train their own people, normally from 16/17 yrs on formal apprentice contracts. It takes 3-4 years, half of which is college the other half site work. So at 21 years they have qualified electricians who have the experience to do the work. You have the qualifications but not the experience. Applying to them is unlikely to get you anywhere, as even if they wanted to they could not take you on to do Free work to gain experience, it is against the law owing to National Minimum Wage regulations. Hence the lack of response from them.

dcelectrical's advice is good. If it experience that you are after then sole tradesmen are a better bet than big companies. So take his advice and try that route. Your only option with the larger companies to is to try for an Adult Traineeship, but they are like gold dust.

Englishman is not wrong you need contacts, electricians to be specific, who could provide you with the experience you need. If I were you that is where I would focus.

The one other possibility with the large companies is that you live in a region where there is government funding for adult trainees. Your local employment centre should be able to advise you on that. Basically if you qualify a large company may take you because they are entitled to claim a grant for your training. It is worth asking.

I wish you all the luck you deserve and let us know how you get on.

Arnold, I know a bloke near me who only really uses people who are I college or have no experience purely because he can pay them a fiver an hour, blokes a complete ****. Two years is a long time but once he starts doing things, he'll start getting in a lot easier.
