Hello all, sorry to be another one of the many many people asking "how do I become" etc but I couldn't find anything on the electricians mate side of things. Ultimately fully qualified is the dream but currently I'm working a 4 days on 4 days off routine in my current job and was thinking about trying to work as a electricians mate with someone in my area (even do it for free for the experience to be honest). What (if any) qualifications would be useful to try and get before hand to help get my foot in the door? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway, enjoy what ever you're all doing this weekend.

Make sure you have a cscs/ecs card that's the most important I would say. It would be beneficial to have any electrical qualifications (2356, NVQ's) any thing to do with electrical installation but ultimately as a mate you don't need them just experience is all that is needed. I have worked with electricians mates who have no qualifications or experience and don't have a clue how to do any thing but that is how you learn.
I wouldn't work for free most sparkys don't like that any way they always will pay you so just look around and maby go with an agency as a mate just for a bit and get some experience.
What is your current job? Do you have any experience in electrical installation?

Don't think any qualifications are required Mate, but you could do The innocuous part P and the 17th, but then with those quals you could be an Electrician, good luck in your endeavours.

Thanks for both of your replies guys, reference baker1988 I currently do security on a military base. I was working with a fire and security firm on days off for a year doing alarm, camera and fire alarm installations both residential and commercial but that's fallen through. I did enjoy it and found fire and security interesting but I'd rather pursue becoming an electrician. I'll look into the 17th edition and part P quals though
