hi, i thought that the reason you use insulated screwdrivers is that if a circuit was live you would be ok from electric shock.

guy i work and i were talking and i asked him he ever had any bad electric shocks, and he said yeah he touched a live circuit with his screwdriver and was shocked and his arm was dead for 2 months.

can i anyone shed any light on this as i feel im missing something very basic to do with elctric shocks??? thanks. and enjoy your evening ehat ever yous are doing

you can touch a live cable without getting a shock. Party trick of mine was that I used to touch the live busbars.
Indeed if you hold an uninsulated screwdriver with one hand, and you have good boots on, you will get a shock, however if any part of your body touches an earth, then you get a shock. Potential difference, 230V

Google - step voltage - this should explain you how.

In the past I did investigate such case in one of the stores. Lady did grab cosmetic display in two different points and got electric shock.

so if i touch live cables with rubber soles on my feet whats the difference?? i dont want an electric shock , so just trying to get it to completely make sense.

One thing to take account of when getting your head around current flow

We talk of conductors and insulators, but in reality an insulator as such does not exist
Everything is a conductor given a high enough potential difference
High insulation value materials could just as well be called "very poor conductors"

When people rely on "poor conductors" like an insulated screwdriver, its only an insulator in the given situation, but given enough potential difference,it would conduct

air is the best insulator

Voltage will never kill you.
Voltage is just the potential.
You must have a curcuit for current to flow and it is the current that kills you or gives you the shock.
If you hang from a live wire with your hand there is no other part of you body touching erath or neutral therefore there is no circuit.
If you hang from a live wire with one hand and hold the neutral or touch earth with the other then you have now completeled the circuit. In essence you are now the bulb and current will flow from one hand through your body and out the other hand. Depending on the resistance of your body at the time (whether your hands are sweaty etc) will depend on how much of a shock you get. Ohms law I=V/R. The less resistance the more current.
