Eh, I think I remember what was going on now.

Wires were taken from the load side of about 6 MCBs and were connected to NO contacts on a multi-pole contactor.
Wires were then looped from here to NC contacts on a similar multi-pole contactor.
(Pretty much what Sintra described except with a multi-pole contactor.

The outputs from the two contactors were wired into DIN rail connectors (this is what was confusing me I think).

That would make sense I guess.

I sort of get what you want to do from your post above.

The issue you need to resolve, is obviously switching the emergency lighting separately from the primary lighting. That will involve taking another live out to each of them, and switching that, much as you've said.
