Could anyne please clarify for me the definitions of the following due to a disagreement between a few of us in work at the moment cheers:-
Maintained-
Non Maintained-
Sustained-
If people could put their definations of the requirements of each and the required wiring please.
After a few opinions i shall reveal the reason for my post, thanks!

Maintained - illuminates on BOTH the normal supply i.e switchable with other area lighting or permanently illuminated, AND on power failure.

Non Maintained - illuminates on power failure ONLY.

Sustained - Same as a combined fitting i.e a normal switchable light fitting but with a battery back up also.

maintained - illuminated normal and power failure /can be switched as normal luminaire
non maintained illuminated on power failure only
Sustained as maintained but contains two lamps 1 for normal 1 for power failure

A non maintained e/m light only comes on when the emergengy supply kicks in, ie a battery
a maintained is permantly on (although this can be switched)
a sustained fitting has two lamps, 1 is fed from the battery the other is from the normal supply.

I think you mean "at least" 2 lamps gents, one of which is the emergency battery fed one.;)

Imagine if you will a 600x600 recessed ceiling grid fitting, 4 lamps 1 of which is battery backed up.

Didn't need saying Lenny,
Same as a non maintained and maintained have at least 1 lamp (could be more)

Maybe not....the way I read your post implied that it could only have 2.

I just want to know what the OP's secret at the end of all this will be?????:D

cheers for replys guys, in all my years not many im 25, i have only ever pulled a perm supply in for my emg exit signs and depending on if they wanted maintained or non maintained had the little link in or out.
On current job myself along with all other sparks have done the same but the emg exit signs require a s/w. The legend showed it to be a maintained fitting but didnt give any other info.
I along with all the sparks said we were right the foreman says he is right.
In my opinion now i would say were all right and all wrong.
As i have never so far had the requirement of a s/w at the emg exit sign.
In my opinion i would say tha legend or someone should have informed us of the exact requirments but on the other hand we should also have asked so i would say 50/50 fault here.
Any opionions please
Not to much of a job to alter as only got to dap a s/w in from nearest klic thankgod and not all ceilings grids up yet.

Me too.:D I'm so excited.:D:D
I suppose to qualify I should add my penny's worth ~ How about addressable emergency lighting systems:p

Did the drawing show a switch? if not then I make you right Craig and you just wire a permanant live through a key switch.

although i cant be 100% im sure it doesnt show a switch. as i say its not the end of the world to sort any way and foremans not bothered but i like to know as im annoyed with myself if im wrong more than anything.
Personally what iv learned from this is i think there should be someway of denoting the differance between a maintained swicthed or a maintained unswitched that is a bit clearer than at the mo. Maintained to me should only mean one thing and not have 2 poss permitations. thinking again the exit signs definatley dont show a switch as the dont even have a circuit and we were told to pick them up the most local lighting circuit.
Ah well jobs coming to a close so good to add some more work to the scenario lol.

It's a secondary school new build, so you mean on all the tome and not only when the circuits switched live is on? And obviously on under mains failure?

An illuminated exit sign is just that iluminated, if its switched who is going to go round and turn them on when it gets dark ? no no switch

in all the areas they have them they are being switched by various PIs some presence some absence some movement, so they way its going to be is every time their is anyone present in the corresponding ares the exit time shall be illuminated with the area lighting and still charging, when no one about it shall just be charging and in mains failure it shall come on. only reason i can think of is as a energy save so their not on at night or weekend when no one about, but when people are then its a maintained fitting.
Going back to the original point of my post i feel its daft that there are 2 permutations for maintained, it should be maintained -on all the time and maintained switched-onwith circuit. or perhaps im just daft lol.
