Discuss Emergency lighting in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

I don't think many people specify or fit sustained exit signs anymore, they were more common when the lamps were tungsten and I think the thinking behind them was if the mains lamp failed there would be a back up for the em. supply,

Did the drawing show a switch? if not then I make you right Craig and you just wire a permanant live through a key switch.
I agree the drawings should show a s/w or the foreman should of told you he wanted them switched as most emg exit signs are maintained.;)

Thanks as that is my stance/opinion, as i say iv only ever wired a maintained fitting in that way, i.e perm feed to charge battery and you then loop off that in the fitting to have it on permantly, but his stance is that a maintained fitting is always with a s/w and that permanently on is sustained lighting which i think is wrong. The definations say a maintained one can be both permantly on or with a s/w which is the requirments in this case. Sustained being all lamps switch on/off with the switch for the circuit and in mains failure one or more of the lamps operate off the battery.
Never mind as all s/w's now added and didnt take long, i just like to understand if and when i balls up as your always learning and im happy yo admit when im wwrong but i like to understand when and how i am.

if its maintained, then it must be on all the time if its a running man type exit thingy. perhaps the s/w that you are seeing on the drawing is meant to be a key switch, as this would need to be provided to simulate fault conditions
