Emergency lighting

Besides running men and emergency exit signs over exits staircases etc got me thinking is there a set ratio of how many emergency lighting would be installed in offices classrooms etc

I thought it was you had to maintain a light level of 1 lux.. So how ever many it takes to achieve this.

It,s down to maintaining a certain light level,however I believe there are different levels for different areas,I think stairwells need more light than open areas.

Honestly it's 1lm in open areas.
i think its 10lm for stairs

its very low, but I try and aim for 20LM across the whole area

Lux is same as LM

difference is LM is the value of measurement and lux is the value of measurement per square meter.

LM is always the same as Lux

Emergency lights are only installed on building exits, and escape corridors. As a rule of thumb, the escape routes must meet minimum of 1lux over 50% of the width of the corridor, with todays leds, this is easily met. Other rules are to obtain the 1 lux in , change of direction, change of height/level, at a fire call points and fire extinguisher points. Other areas to look under risk assessment, at are large public areas, or areas deemed as high risk. Last one I cant think of is disabled toilets.

When designing a building what I tend to do is have emergency fittings lighting the exit routes through offices etc and running men signs where required. It's normally all about cost though solong as 1 or 10 lux is achived respectively

Again off the top of my head 8w tube fittings would need to be spaced 11-12m apart to achieve 1 lux on edge or overlapping areas. Led i would think would easiler give you more spacing

LM is always the same as Lux
