Hello…..

Can a maintained emergency light be used as general use light.. for example in a hall way where you switch the light on and off by a switch but has a perm feed for failed main supply??

Any help would be good

Yes u can.
They have a Perm feed for the Emergancy lighting and then a switched live to turn on the Lamp when switched on.

sustained fitting?

if your unsure there are two types maintained and non maintained.

on a side note anyone worked on luxonic v led emergency recessed lights? got some that are not powering up and they were supplied with no paperwork

Most fittings are dual mode maintained these days...as Jiga states, they have permanent feed, and a switch feed...if you link the two feeds out the unit becomes maintained...connect only Permanent feed, its non maintained. Connect permanent feed, and a switch feed, and you have a switchable maintained fitting.

If the fitting is a non maintained only...then there is no switched feed, and loss of power turns on the lamp.
If the fitting is maintained, the the fitting is lite constantly...ie door exits.
If the fitting is dual mode...as most are these days, the option to used the switch feed gives you this switch option.
Example of mixing Maintained lighting with normal lighting in a corridor, providing all to be switch off, but still provide light in the event of a power failure.

if you can switch it would depend on the lights purpose. it may be possible to switch it but that is not the end of the story.

The circuit I posted, is the most common way to wire Em lighting in buildings. Most building designers will specify the lighting to be used, so the EM lights look in place with the rest of the lighting. Only other way to install, is through up some ugly bulkheads.

I think you have missed my point, i was trying to say although it may be possible to siwtch a EM doesnt mean you should. I was thinking along the lines of Exit signs, you could switch them doesnt mean you should.

That does help, it shows that the problem is almost certainly in the way it is connected and not a problem with the fittings.
