Discuss emergency lighting ! in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

most self contained would be 30 mins, and suggest you would have either central battery bank or all the em lighting would be self contained....with respect my friend, you are really out of your depth here, has your company thrown you in the deep end...?

Most manufactured self contained are 3hrs these days, with led versions giving even longer.
Out of interest, the BS only requires 1 hour for evacuation. But because these units take upto 16 hours to recharge fully, so it was deemed that 2-3 evacuations in a 24hr period was an acceptable standard.

Interesting,

The only installation which has EM lighting which I go near these days also had a generator attached. Does this have any bearing on the EM lighting requirements?

I don't do the testing, just the replacements or repairs as prescribed by the company who do the testing.

If its self contain, then no, the gennie has no bearing.....some sustained em lighting works totally off the gennie, and hence would be in fire proof cable fp200 or fp100 singles. They have a simple relay in the em light fitting...when normal power is lost, the relay clicks out to essential incoming power from the gennie.

To the op ...Hope this has help, reading between the lines you are working for a blue chip, jack of all trades maintenance company...for your own professional ability....look up and search BS5266 basics...and consider the following..
1. position and sighting of em lighting
2. methods of wiring of maintained and non maintained lighting
3. wiring test switching, including contactor switching.
4. lux level requirements, open public spaces, corridors, staircases and exits
5. correct exit signage....height and size
6. identification of em lighting...by number a recorded location
7. log books and corrective maintenance

Hopefully will give you move information to help you

By the same token the guy according to his profile is an apprentice and we shouldn't be encouraging him to be left to work on his own, conducting life safety reporting testing ...full stop!! He shouldn't be working on such systems on his own , with or without BS 5266!! Which by the sound of it, isn't available to him!!

As my previous E54, I hope to give some people a way forward. These companies expect too much from their guys, when they have no idea themselves...just hope the op takes the advice to research for his own benifit
