Hi guys does anyone know how to test an emersion heater element? and is there anything strange I should look out for. Many thanks guys.:)

Their are various tests that could be undertaken ,it depends on what the fault is----Is it not Heating the water---is it underheating the water--is it overheating the water ?

More info please PB

Hi first of all check for 230v by taking the cap off the immersion test between live of the stat and the neutral then check for power other side of stat should be set at 55 c if no power other side of stat feeding the element then you know its the thermostat if there is power the element is at fault . Turn the power off at dp switch then i use a low reading ohm meter test between the ends of the element you should get some resistance not sure on the reading hope this helps

O.K you first will need to check the Fuse Circuit breaker at the Consumer unit- if o.k check the voltage at the heater terminals, if o.k then you need to do continuity test on heater element[ after isolating the circuit :)]- if open circuit then new heater element
If Fuse /circuit breaker is ok but no voltage at heater terminals then trace back testing at the Stat ,at the Local Isolator ,and if necessary at the consumer unit till you find the fault.

If fuse/circuit breaker has operated then you need to do insulation resistance test to find cause of short...could be the wiring but more likely the element blown .

is that enough to go on or do you need anymore info ?

Check the overtemprature cut out,(if there is one at all) it will either be inbuilt into the thermostat or there will be one between the live element connection and the thermostat, or possibly even both.

The thermostat one will probably be a small black or red square, possibly nect to the temp setting but look all around it. just press it and if it is that thats tripped you will hear a small click.

The one between the element and the thermostat will need pressing and if tripped you will hear a click.

always worth trying those before ripping the circuit to pieces :)

the most thing is the element resistance i think, if the resistance is too big then it is broken, if too small then short circuit

Switch it on and watch that meter wheel revolving like there is no tomorrow
After witnessing the speed of rotation the customer would beg you not to fix it :)
