People show their true colours when it comes to matters like this, if someone is so rash as to drop you out of their life then they were never really a true friend.
The Stranglers wrote a song called Skin Deep which is all about these kind of 'friends' who are only in it for their own agenda, genuine freinds see past the differences in opinion and respect each others views even if they do not agree.

Reason I ask is with age comes experience. And experience learns us never to discuss ultimately three things. Politics, Football and religion.

I'm 48. I don' have to deal with customers and if anyone asks for my opinion on the 3 above topics I tell them. The majority of them don't like my opinions once I've told them and I don't particularly care. I'm old and grumpy and that's the way I like it. I have this great tee shirt that has on it "GRUMPY.
