Hi, Apologies if this has already been cleared up.

There is a lot of conflicting answers as to exactly what you need to be a fully qualified electrician, both on here and at college.

here is my list , please correct me where i am wrong:

1. Tech cert level 2 and level 3
2. 17th edition and ECS Card / Part P?
3. NVQ level 3
4. AM2
5. ECS Gold card
6. Show me the money

cheers

• Tech certs levels 2 & 3.
• NVQ3.
• AM2.
• latest version of BS7671.

You will then be classed as fully qualified, however some would argue that how can you be "fully" qualified if you haven't got the testing and inspect.

and balls the size of melons.

I think as well it boils down to what you want to work on & what area you want to work on.

I know electricians who've done all the commercial side of things, shop fitting & new build site work & done it since they left school yet now they don't seem interested in NVQ yet they're always flat out with work doing landlord properties etc.

Also my bet is could be wrong they've got a lot more experience & know a lot more then someone who's just qualified.

I used to see it on site in my old trade where many lads who've just qualified were quite clueless yet they had the certificate to say they're more competent then say joe bloggs who's been doing it 30 yrs , The electrician trade I'm sure may be different.

Is testing and inspect not covered in the tech certs?
Thanks for the reply's, Im not looking for a fast track as I know that doesn't exist. My next goal is to get into a trainee role with a good firm to hopefully convince them im worth the cost of the level 3.

Any advice on how to approach getting the first job and what to avoid/look out for?

good luck with your career. The way to success is to take pride in everything you do and satisfaction in knowing you have done it well. There will always be work for good electricians.

The level 3 EAL course I started in September does have an Inspection and Test module. Apparently if I wish to go down the domestic installer self employment route, the CPS assessor would assess my ability to I&T based on that, not on a separate qualification.

Yeah the same is true for the level 3 C&G I plan to take. I feel uneasy about doing any self employment work until i feel very competent, I feel i need to cut my teeth with a firm for at least 5 years after completing the qualifications.
