Discuss Expanding foam? in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Our regs dictate that conduits are only filled to a certain percentage which means there's good air flow through them and hence good heat dissipation.

The thing I don't like about the though of plastering directly onto the cable (apart from the obvious lack of future maintenance possibilities) is that you never know what is in the cement. Often waterproofing agents, quicksetting agents, elasticizers and keying agents etc are in the plaster or even the mortar between the bricks and gawd knows whether they'll be compatible with the PVC.

Take almost any Pvc/Pvc cable out from under the cement/plaster that may have been there 40,50 or 60 years and I suspect most will have little if any damage at all to the insulation
Lime was once used in cement 50 or so years ago and I suppose where it existed it may have been corrosive but would it be the exception
Plaster/cement seems to have a positive preservation effect on most cabling

I occasionally use building foam, and occasionally it goes on a little bit of twin and earth but to be fair it's not very often I use it, it's good T fiing big holes.

the NICEIC bloke marked me down for putting plaster straight on the grey of the twin and earth, saying it was going to chemically knacker the cable, but in reality it's never in a million years going to do any damage worth worrying about.

other instance of a niceic not knowing his arse from his elbow, but spouting drivel to members.

Out of interest, what did you say to the assessor regarding him marking you down on a recognised installation method?

Well it was the last job of the day and couldn't be doing with arguing with a bloke due for retirement who cold have made my day worse.

he did point out a reg to me but quite honestly it's a load of tosh, I know what damages cables and what doesn't, I did make s complaint to the NIC about the other departure that he made up.

where in the regs does it say you can do this 12th cause I can reminder that. you worked to the EWA or the 15th as a guide and if you wanted on a council MOD or school/trust GOV NHS job you had to be NIC. And they were B***tar**s then.

If polystyrene or polyurethane foam comes into contact with thermoplastic (pvc) cable sheathing, plasticiser can migrate from the thermoplastic to the foam. The thermoplastic sheathing then becomes less flexible and the foam becomes soft and tacky. Such contact should be avoided regulation 522.5.3 of bs7671 says Materials liable to cause mutual or individual deterioration or hazardous degradation shall not be placed in contact with each other.

Most if not ALL building insulation material such as polystyrene and polyurethane should no longer be detrimental to PVC cable and pipes. And has been so for a good number of years now. You only need to worry about the old stuff thats still laying around in lofts etc...
