Well there you go, you have answered your own question.
Monkey's and peanuts springs to mind here.

your paying top dollar, but then, your in a fix he's getting you out of. It's a lot more than I ever got subbing!!
I would say half a day is possible, but depends on the AC run and how much work is invilved, can easilly be a day.
If he's doing a good job and your making money go with the flow, but don't let him hold you to ransom

Hi, as a customer who has just had a PV install completed, I think I understand your dilemma.. But personally I would say unless it is a VERY minimalist piece of work that the sparky has to do (ie. you could easily expect him in and out in half a day, then moving on to the next job..) then you need to be setting aside a full day rate and compensating the guy for that. You have to be realistic, even if something looks on paper like it should be do-able in a couple of hours, often, customer interaction, unforeseen logistics on site etc etc always add up to a full day regardless... And don't forget, it always cuts both ways... Oftentimes, that full day might morph into a good 9 or 10 hour stint, for no demonstrable reason other than Joe Customer turned out to be a complete arse! (No, that wasn't me! Honest!) :) lol

Is he commissioning and supplying certification for that money?

I suppose you have to look at it like a customer would look at your price, how would you feel if your customer turned around and said he thought you overcharged as it didn't take as long as expected or similar? If he has a real pig of a job, will you pay him more?

The chances are you are both earning a good wedge, and if he's taking on the certification then you have past on a lot of responsibility to him. Times are hard at the moment and their are plenty of sparks looking for work, but if he does a good job for a price you agreed to, then I can't really see the issue myself.

Employing electricians.... Not much. My role in the job is everything apart from wiring the system up (Please don't hurl abuse at me for being MCS accredited when not trained as an electrician) :icon9:

Been there done that :)

I pay my guys ÂŁ140 each a day- They come as a pair- The job takes them as long as it takes them

When we sub get paid price per job (plus materials), sometimes it takes one looong day, sometimes 2 or 3 days. The way we work is to get the job done right otherwise it will cost us more to return and fix our problems.
Take the rough with the smooth, never letting our contractor down and even though there are cheaper subbies out there, we always (so far) have been on site on time and finished on time. If our contractor started questioning the price i would welcome him to pay some muppet less, but usually we are geting there other subbys work due to them letting them don all the time.

Many time we have been 'pulled' up on a price job for completing the job too quick (not solar), unfortuanly for these clients we have to catch a few rays midday to satisfy them that we have earn't our dollar.
At the end of the day if a price is agreed then i personally would like the job done ASAP, and would, myself, sometimes pay extra to get the job done quicker! - but not everone see's it this way.

just my 2p's worth

VMan is spot on.

If you think that you are being ripped off, get a quote from another electrician, or give one of our Eastern European friends a call.

He does a good job, but if he finishes the job in half a day then we are going to dispute the job rate he is giving us for future jobs...

The Job rate is ÂŁ420.00, i feel it is ÂŁ170.00 too much but i dont want to dispute a reasonable price.

the last time i looked being a spark was a skilled trade, youve got yourself a good spark who charges proper rates, you have noticed that if he grafts his nuts off he can do it in half a day and you think your paying too much,if he does it in half a day thats the skills he's learnt over the years or he could string it out and you think you have value for money, pay him by the hour then see how long it takes, i cant see your point to be fair,if you want cheap labour theres people willing to work free for the expierence..:frown2:

let me get this right, you are paying him ÂŁ420 for a job which is taking him a day, but you think could be done in half a day????
For ÂŁ420 a day i'll go anywhere in the country to work!!! where do you want me?
